Remington Braas Quality or Lack of ?

montanarifleman I have been using federal 300rum brass and it is hands down better than remington and nosler brass and it is priced better than nosler brass and natchez has it in stock

How does the weight compare? Have you checked the volume against RP?.....Rich

the fed brass is a little heaver and the volume is almost the same the fed brass full to the top will hold 108.1 gr of retumbo and the rem case holds 108.8 on average I get 42 round per bag that are the same weight which on average is 282.5 per case with the rem brass I'm lucky if I get 30 rounds per bag and they average 279.6 per case

Thats REAL LIFE data/thanks..........Rich

I agree on FC brass. I don't have an ultra mag, but I have read a lot of reviews on Fed brass being too soft. I have always had to trim it after every 2 firings so I guess that goes along with that assessment. However, Some of the most accurate loads I have found in my standard calibers have been with federal brass. trimming sucks, but I like my holes as close together as possible, and I will do what I have too to get them that way. Often I cannot justify the cost of Lapua but it is top notch stuff no doubt. I have fired enough of it to at least have a healthy appreciation for what all brass SHOULD be.

To one and all,

Appreciate the comments/requests, and yes, I'm more than happy to pass them along to the Finns. They DO listen, and try to accomodate things for the US market. Not promising anything, and it'd be a long time down the road before anything would materialze.

Have some other very intersting stuff in the works, though, that you guys should find very interesting.

Stay tuned.

I don't know about a petition, but yes, I do pass requests along and they are actively discussed. The Finns come over here for the SHOT show every year, and Adam and I go over there (Nurnberg, Germany) for the IWA show. They're very keen on what's hot in the US market, since we actually do make up a sizable percentage of their component business. You'll note that our last several new products are aimed directly at satisfying American tastes, and are not really all that well lknown in the European markets. The new 260 is a case (HA!) in point. Not widely used in Europe, but popular over here. Ditto for last years release of the 22-250, and the new 308 Palma case was a direct result of requests from the US Palma Team. They listen, and add products as time and production schedules permit.

Hang in there, and I'll be happy to keep you posted.

Perhaps Len or someone could formulate a meaningful poll that covers a variety newer of cartridges and brass options?

Off the top of my head, I don't know exacltly what that would look like. But, petitions often times have a pre-supposed outcome.

I'm not interested in a poll... I'm interested in ULTRA BRASS

...then a petition is probably better for you.

But, a market study is what a manufacturer would likely be more interested in.

MontanaRifleman - I'm curious though... Knowing where you stand now with brass, would you have chosen a different cartridge? Or, are you just looking to improve on what you've accomplished with your 300 RUM thus far?

Good question Richard... I have been reluctantly satisfied with the Rem brass to this point as I was shooting 180 E-Tips to 3400 plus from the Ultra. I have always wanted to try the GS 177's because they have a very good BC for their weight and... their design allows for less pressure and higher velocities going down the tube. In my testing a couple of days ago. I got up to about 3550 (92 gr RL17) with some external pressure signs. 93 gr blew a primer and caused a very stiff bolt.

The 92 gr brass will not hold a primer. The 91 gr brass will, but another firing at 91 grains will likely ruin the pocket with a 2 shot case life. I expected all along to be able to excced 3500 with the 177's and that velocoity improves their ballistics and stability. I should be able to get it. The E-Tips on the other hand are maxed out at about 3400 or so and that's all the farther they can be pushed. They pressure up real quick once they get to their threshold.

Another cartridge? I have also pushed the 180 E-Tips to 3190 in a 300 WSM using RL17 in a 24 3/8ths barrel. Thats only a little more than 200 fps behind the much larger RUM which takes about 50% more powder for about 8% more velocity. RL17 is the way to get the higher velocities, but it's too fast for most bullets in the RUM unless your shooting something real light. That's where the GS 177's come into the picture and they are maxing right about were I expected, but the brass is not holding up.

I have been considering some other cartridegs and wildcats like the 300-375 Ruger, 300 Dakota (same 404 Jeffery parent case as the RUM), and the 300-338 Ultra (which is Rem brass only deal). These smaller capacity cases would be more friendly to RL17 as a propellant.

That being said, I shot 180 Cutting Edge bullets up to 3450 with Retumbo and they have a little better BC than the E-Tips and they are a lot cheaper than the 177's. Hope to go out again this afternoon and revisit the CE and GS bullets.

If I can get the hoped for performance of the 177's, it will have an effective expanding range to 1500 yds plus which is wayyy farther than any other 300 RUM combo. if the CE 180's shoot well to 3450, they'll get me past 1200 for a more cost effective solution.

Remington brass is inexpensive brass. Comparing it to higher priced brass ( some costing double per case ), Isn't that like comparing a Mustang to an Escort?

For the price, Rem brass has been fine for my use. I shoot 1000 + yards with no brass issues. I do not shoot competitively , nor do I think I am good enough to, therefore I need not buy pricey brass.

I have gotten 12 firings from a single casing in a 300 ultra, more than that in 30-06's.

I have seen winchester brass (apples to apples) that needed the primer hole worked on because when they punch out the center hole it doesn't completely come off and is left hanging on in the inside of the casing. ( like a chad on a voting card in florida )

Is Remington brass the highest quality...no, but I don't expect ferrari performance from a pinto either. ( OK I admit that is a stretch, but point taken? ):D
