I've shot the 25-06AI and currently I am using a 25-284. I like both of them. The 25-06AI was as built years ago and had a 10 twist barrel. The 25-284 has a 1-7.25" Helix6 25" long. I've only shot the 131 BJ so far. R26 gets me 3160 FPS. I don't think you can go wrong with either of these, or any of the other 25 calibers already mentioned. They all have their place.

I bought a Shilen last year for the purpose of building a short range Benchrest rifle.
First thing that struck me when I unpacked it was, " WOW, a premium priced barrel & this is the best that they can do with the bluing!?"
Really, their bluing is not spectacular!
My plans have gone in other directions, so I have not shot it yet.
If anyone wants a 26" heavy varmint barrel for a small shank Savage, 1:10 chambered in 250 Savage, I'll make you a deal.

25-6.5 PRC?
I am running the 25 SST. Had two barrels spun up in Proof, but sold them to buddies who had to have them and picked up a Preferred Barrel prefit in 7.5 twist at 21". That's what I am shooting now.
I shoot the 133 Berger, and with my 24 I was over 3200fps, my 22" I backed it down and was at 3050ish. My 21" I am up to 2900 fps and may push a little more. H1000 and BR 2 primers.
Love the short action magnum for hunting. The SST is the easy button get it all from Sherman. But you pay a premium. If I didn't do that I would go with a SAUM or the 25-284 variety. Short and fat is where it's at…

The Ackley version of the 25-284 would actually be the Shehane version. The original 284 shoulder is 35°. Not much gain going to the improved shoulder and for me, not worth the work. They 284 feeds fine from mags and brass wear is minimal with the factory shoulder. I think it's around 3 grains more powder. My 25-284 with a 24" barrel is right at 3200 fps with great accuracy. I really prefer 3000 fps for most use. Out west on the flats I push it to 3200 for a flatter trajectory. For a short action, I'd run a 25 SST.

I dream about turning my standard 25-06 into a fast twist 25 Sherman. All I need is time and money.

25-06 is not a good match for today's long skinny high BC bullets. Been there and done that when Blackjack was a going concern. Even when I did get it dialed in the overbore and twist was a dragon, duh! Went back to Speer 120 gr spitzer and normal twist. There are other cartridges in .257 that are more suited for these bullets.

I've watched and been impressed with a 25-284 printing some tiny groups at 1,000 yards with a 133 Berger. I already have a 284, 6.5-284, and 6-284 so I opted for a 25-6.5 PRC for the sake of confusion. Holding sub 1/2 MOA at 600 yards with a 23" light 2B Bartlien barrel, 133 Bergers at 3270 fps. The ballistics are impressive but I've yet to use it hunting. Hopefully I'll have some field information to share this fall.
