Just back from a thoroughly enjoyable 5 days in the Czech Republic attending their "Police Sniper Championship with International Attendance"….a competition for "active Czech and International Police and Military Members".

Whilst the bulk of the 106 participants represented former Soviet states such as Bulgaria, Hungary and Russia several 'Western' teams were also present from locations as diverse as Portugal, Denmark and Belgium:

US attendance was limited to one individual (who rather made up for his lack of team mates with the size of his personality!). The Brit team was a rather ad hoc grouping assembled by Cz resident David S (who posts here as 'ds').

David's generosity and hard work in ensuring we were to have a great time was evident from the moment we stepped off the plane in Prague to be whisked through passport and customs by a Czech police escort until the moment of our departure. Czech hospitality was superb (and, I must say, the range food (provided by the Cz Army) was absolutely excellent!).

All shooting was known distance; the only pressure imposed was that of time. In the photograph below a detail is being briefed. In this instance the target on the right was to be engaged with 5rds prone at 300m; the centre hostage target with 2rds prone at 250m and the left target with 5rds sitting unsupported at 200m:

All shooting took place within 450m; with half the final day being taken up with quite a challenging variety of single-shot targets from a variety of shooting positions between 172 and 69 metres.

A few other photos:

The Czech police are far more military in nature than Western police forces (for example, they regularly deploy snipers to Afghanistan):

Details always presented a fascinating array of kit and styles (only the nearest 2 shooters in Brit cam are British; the other fellows in Brit cam are Russian (russian styles ranged from classic soviet cam through to mafia-look leather jackets!))

The fellow standing with his back to the camera (a Czech police sniper)won the individual competition with some outstanding marksmanship (the team event was won by a Russian team)

And a wide variety of Gucci kit:

Great post and pics.

Its nice to see that the Czech Republic is not as the US media keeps showing us over here. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

A real nice array of weapons also.

I noticed two things that I would not have thought of myself.

One was the fella who's front scope cap flipped down. Very good idea for a sniper situation.

The other was the unique use of the tripod for the spotting scopes.

The two closest rifles in the 4th pic from the bottom. What's the idea behind the rear folding monopod? It looks a bit long for the front bipod.

I've been attempting to 'invent' that is very quickly adjustable for elevation but haven't been successful....yet /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Thanks posting.

Honors to David S for his successful efforts.

Very impressive.

Thanks Roy,

The spotting scope idea was a new one on me, rather clever....and everyone seemed to be doing it!

I think the hecate rifle rear monopods only look large because the bipods are at their lowest setting.

Thanks for the pict and info... extra big money in some of those rifles........

The tripod use is good to know, I've been having those things around forever and hadn't thunk or seen them rigged like that. I do believe that with a poncho or some 550 and expedient a fella could live comfortably under that setup for a while, a "Bogen Home".

Very nice pics BD, it all worked out rather well. I think everyone enjoyed it and also the military style comp we ran just before it.

Thank you to those that came over and shot.

Best wishes,

David.

Interesting info and images. Could you give us a rough description of the optics and maybe what makes of rifles were used. I recognize some Schmidts but others are ?. Neat method of attaching the spotting scope, definitely going to try that one. Obviously Zeiss won a few tenders for supplying optics to some of the agencies represented. Never thought of going bigger for the tripod, been searching for a sturdy, steady smaller one tho.

Ian,

70 percent would be Sako TRG 22 with S&B 4-16 or 3-12 PMII. Czech URNA use SSG 3000`s, Russian Alpha team had AI`s I think, Germans - G22`s (AI`s in 300 Win Mag)and last year a couple of DSR 1`s. Noticed a couple of FN Ultima Ratio rifles - the one I looked at had a 8x optic on it - Russian looking. A couple of Blaser LSR 2`s as well. The Cz 700 Sniper M1 rifle with S&B in the pic is my loaner rifle.

Optics - really S&B land, one Hungarian had a Nightforce NXS and I think I saw a few Leupolds and Zeiss VMV`s / Hensold scopes.

Spotting scopes - tried the Zeiss set up, I prefer my Optolyth TBS 100 on a Ray Vin tripod, also Ewing tripods impressed me and may be better (both small).

David,

Blimey, you've done rather better on the ID than I would have done! (didn't realise that the FNs weren't Hecates when 308 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif !)...pretty sure there was an SV-98 or two knocking about there too.

Ewen,

Did you get my 2 emails? Your software seems to bounce them.

David and Matt,
Thanks both for some interesting info. Seeing all that gear and the shooting positions etc. is very enjoyable. Glad that you guys enjoyed yourselves.

I am surprised there is not more steel target use in such events, we setup some very challenging shots with our steel plates. You either hit the thing and knock it over or miss.

Excellent report and awesome pictures! Thanks for taking the time to post this! I very much enjoyed reading about it.

Devin

Hi Ian,

On a military style comp just before the plod one we used steel gongs as UKD targets, the range was in a valley, it is sort of nice to spot the hits and wait for the sound report of the hit after.

At the plod comp the targets are electric fallers and risers on timers - quicker to run with 100+ competitors but not so imaginative.

David.
