Best Rifle Out Of The Box Part two

Next rifle I buy, will be A 100% Custom Rifle. I will never trust an "Out Of The Box" brand name again!

Cooper and Fierce both offer a 1/2" MOA guarantee on their rifles with test targets just as an FYI..

Yes but they are also very pricy and I have read a lot of bad reviews about Fierce, from many unsatisfied customers. I could have bought a Fierce which I liked the look of, but after reading the reviews I backed off! The internet is an excellent resource when researching rifles!

Wilson has been a long time barrel manufacturer producing a wide range of barrel types from low end to custom to individuals as well as being an OEM to several rifle manufacturers. They acquired Cooper Arms a while back and produce the barrels used on their rifles. My Cooper in 6.5x284 which I have owned for about six years has a Wilson custom barrel on it. I don't know the number but it has a .78" diameter at the muzzle, fluted, 26". With about 1000 rounds through it, she still shoots better then .25MOA. It holds its POI cold or warm for at least 60 rounds between cleaning. It has accounted for a few dozen deer, antelope and coyotes, out to 1188 yards. IMO it's a superb barrel!
This is a typical Three shot zero at 100 yards, BTW my rifle also has a Huskemaw 5x20 on it. It had served me well.

After reading your post I was curious as to which Wilson Barrel Corlane put on my rifle, they told me that my barrel is a Wilson Match Grade barrel, which is the same barrel they use on their custom Rocky Mountain Rifles, apparently top of the line. Thanks for that information Greyfox!

There's one that just never gets enough discussion here and that's CZ-USA.

They generally run a sub MOA package deal every year or every few years. Their actions are rock solid and you will never finger a finer factory trigger than their singe set trigger.

It's a fully adjustable trigger that if you push it forward becomes a feather light set trigger.

It's built on a modified Mauser action that is basically flawless operationally.

I really ought to remember to give them a mention more often but since mostly I just have their pistols and shotguns it always slips my mind. The CEO and her husband were clients of mine for about ten years and they were always bringing me guns to try.

I even had the honor of getting to teach her husband to shoot which was a ball. They brought one of their MOA guaranteed 300wm's out that I shot for a few days and then he asked me to teach him. He'd never fired a rifle in his life and within about 2 hours I had him busting rocks at 579 yards with it, shot after shot.

Great guy and man what a fun day.

+1! Their handguns and shotguns are pretty darn good too.

Cheers!

I haven't read a bad accuracy review, just some hick ups early on with deliveries..

A lot of new manufacturers have them. They have the standard Edge rifles at my local sportsmans for 2300, pretty nice stick for the dollars.

I could have bought one that Corlane Sporting Goods had in stock that I liked the look of, but it was selling for $3,400.00 and I did not know how it would fit me because they are 5 hours away and they are heavier then what I would like, plus reading the reviews put me off.

As mentioned I paid $2,240.00 for mine, I like the look of it, fits me like a clove, weights 9 lbs. with the scope on it and is shooting ½" groups at 200 yards. I would recommend what I did to anyone that wants a great shooting rifle for that price.

Is that the total you have in it now?

If so, it's not bad for a pretty much custom built on a Weatherby Action.

WildRose: This is the breakdown of what I paid for the barrel and the modifications:

Wilson Match Grade 3 Contour Barrel: $300.00 (only paid his cost)
Glass Bedding and Barrel installation: $200.00
Barrel Flutes: $200.00
Ceracoat: $90.00
Trigger adjustment set to 2 lbs.: N/C
Total cost: $790.00

New Weatherby Ultra Lightweight 300 Win Mag I purchased on sale for $1,450.00 CDN for a total of $2,240.00 CDN which at todays exchange rate is: $1,707.84 USD.

Wildrose I know that you know your stuff when it comes to Rifles. Question for you: How would you rate the Weatherby action, is it considered a fair, good or excellent action? Thanks!

One of the best and most reliable actions ever produced. It's a beefed up and improved Mauser.

I've never owned one but have shot several and sooner or later I'm going to have some extra money laying around when I see a good deal on an accumark in 7mm STW and I'll have one of my own.

I mean what the heck, I only have 3 of them now! gun)

FEENIX posted a link in a related thread, the link discussed the best actions, this is what the writer said about the Weatherby Action:

Article: The Finest Bolt Actions Ever Produced By Chuck Hawks

Weatherby Mark V

When Roy Weatherby designed his turn bolt action he departed from the established norm in many ways. He decided to address the issue of bolt wobble and largely eliminated the problem by making his one-piece bolt as fat as the receiver rings. The locking lugs are machined into a reduced diameter bolt head. Instead of two big front locking lugs, he used three rows of three small lugs, reminiscent of some artillery pieces, making a total of nine locking lugs spaced to give a bolt rotation of only 54-degrees. The bolt body is fluted to reduce friction and bearing surface during operation.

Because the fat Weatherby Mark V bolt is so smooth in operation and has a short rotation to unlock and lock, it is one of the fastest of all bolt actions for follow-up shots. The bolt knob is a large, smooth, comfortable ball. Inside the bolt is a massive, one-piece firing pin.

The cartridge head is enclosed in "three rings of steel" (barrel, receiver ring and recessed bolt head), made famous by Weatherby advertising. This action is immensely strong. The Mark V is probably the strongest bolt action in the world.

The extractor is a short, but sizable, claw mounted in the bolt head and there is a plunger ejector in the bolt face. The latter is actually more reliable than the fixed, receiver mounted ejector of the Mauser 98 type, as it is practically impossible for it to be bent or damaged.

In the event of a blown case the Mark V handles escaping powder gasses extremely well. There are three gas vent holes in the bolt body and a machined steel bolt shroud completely encloses the end of the bolt to keep powder gasses out of the shooter's face.

There is no separate bolt release. To remove the bolt, hold back the trigger.

The highly polished and finished receiver is machined from a block of solid steel. It has a flat bottom and incorporates a serious recoil lug. There is also a generous loading/ejection port and, typical of push feed actions, a cartridge can be fed directly into the chamber and the bolt closed.

The steel magazine floorplate is hinged at the front and the magazine floorplate latch is a button located in the front of the trigger guard. This button is easy to depress, yet takes a serious grip on the floorplate to prevent inadvertent opening under magnum recoil.

The Mark V comes with an excellent, user adjustable, trigger mechanism. Its two position safety locks the bolt closed and was designed to operate in near silence to avoid spooking game. There is a visible cocking indicator below the bolt shroud.

The 9-lug Mark V is a heavy action, basically designed for Weatherby magnum cartridges. Weatherby subsequently addressed this by the introduction of a considerably lighter 6-lug (two rows of three) action for standard calibers.

Weatherby's Mark V is probably the best of the modern, push feed bolt actions. It lacks controlled feed, but offers great strength, smoothness, fast operation and very high manufacturing quality. It is one of the all-time great bolt actions and it was designed from the outset for a hunting rifle. For hunting the most dangerous (Class 4) game I'd probably prefer a controlled feed action, such as a Mauser 98 or Winchester 70, but for most other purposes I'd take a Mark V

I am now completely In Love with Suzie Q )

Yep it's a good honest review and gives the history of it's development.

Roy Weatherby was a "Rifleman's Rifle Man" in the truest sense of the phrase.

No I won't be voting for Trump, he's a two bit lying carny hack with a billion dollar war chest. That he could be nominated for POTUS just tells you how bad off we are as a nation.

I'm an independent, have never voted a straight ticket in my life but this will be only the 2nd time since I began voting in 82 that I will not be voting for the republican nominee if Trump is it.

The man doesn't have a principled bone in his body and I think he'll be a disaster for the country if elected.

My buddy has shot a Weatherby 300 for several years with a heavy Hart barrel he had installed. The action is smooth as silk. With a McMillan stoch, the rifle is great looking and deadly accurat!

Very sad...Looks like we don't have too much else to choose from. The alternatives are a senile socialist that should be exciled to his loving Cuba, Russia, or Venezuela, or a devisive witch that belongs behind bars....and wants will take your guns...pick your poison!

Greyfox, have you see a picture of mine? If you have not it's on page 6 of this thread.

As for Trump, I study and follow American Politics as a hobby and have correctly predicted the winner of every general election since Ronald Reagan. I predicted that Trump would win this election in July 2015.

I can not imagine Corrupt Hillary and Bill back in the White House! They would only expand government and continue Obama's stupid and devastating policies. Lets not forget that "I did not have sexual relations with that woman", accused rapist and impeached then disbarred Lawyer President Bill is the biggest liar of them all.

If Hillary gets in we will loose our 2nd amendment rights, as her picks for the SCOTUS replacements will be anti gun and that is scary!
