A lot of your decisions will be based on what your definition of ELR is. It seems that many folks have a varied definition so you need to decide what your distance is going to be. After shooting competitively and just for the sheer fun of it, I warm up at 1,000 yards and work my out to 2,500 yards which is the longest distance I can shoot with a good backstop at my current location which is not a certified range. Longer distances require me to use another location. Two miles or 3,520 yards I move further out on the desert which limits the times I can shoot without awful mirage during the middle part of the day. I tested some 7mm cartridges and decided that the 7mm is too light for me. .30 caliber and 8mm are certainly OK but the real deal for intermediate ELR is the .338 in a cartridge with larger case capacity. The Edge is a bare minimum capacity so I shoot the 33XC case or even the .338-378 WBY which has the same capacity basically. If I push a little further I'll use the bigger cases and bullets for the .375 CheyTac. I don't care for the 416 CT but I have one I work with. Be prepared for the search for the places to shoot at those distances. Cases and bullets get to be more expensive the bigger you go and dies can be expensive and hard to find. Most shoot the Match solids. CheyTac cases are really difficult to find by the best makers. Bertram can be found but lacks the quality in my experience. Examine all the variables and find the places to shoot within a reasonable distance. Most of all, enjoy the whole experience! :)
