6.5 CM vs 7MM-08 head to head ...

Fastest load in the Hornady handbook for the 162 ELD-X is 2700. According to their website, the heaviest factory load is the 150 ELD-X at 2770. Gonna be hard to get 2800 out of the 7-08/162, even with a 26" barrel.

    Need some guidance..

Go to Cabela's or Bass Pro; sale on now. Buy a Rem 700 Long Range in .30-06, 7mm RM or .300 WM, for under $800. Any of the 3 will be "enough" for elk; the .300 WM probably the best. B&C stock with Aluminum bedding block. You want to do more with it, you can, but it will be less expensive and...

    .30-06 v .308 for LR

The .30.06 was the round of choice in long-range competition for almost half of the 20th Century, until the .308 became the favorite in the late 50's and early 60's. The primary reason that the .308 superseded the .30-06 was the lower recoil. Yes, the .308 case design is efficient, allowing...

    Anyone in Texas?

Same place it always was. They also have a range at Juliff. Easy to find on Google Earth. Everything got wet in the Hurricane, though. Glad I don't live there any more.

    Anyone in Texas?

50 years ago, Bayou Rifles range was at Addicks. Where is it now?

    Using the elevation turret properly

I didn't major in math, but 1 MOA at 500 yards should be 5". 51" of drop should equal 5.2 MOA, or 1/4" under 21 clicks.

    Getting started reloading

I can remember when lubing a case meant a clean, uninked stamp pad (does anyone here remember rubber stamps?) soaked with lanolin. But that was a looong time ago.

    Mid range deer/elk

7-08AI is probably a good choice, if handloading is preferred. The .308, Factory 165 Nosler Accubond, through a 24" tube will, at 5000', show about 2400/2110 at 300, 2151/1695 at 500. Should be enough for just about anything.

    Elevated scope bases

Have you considered Boyd's for a new stock? Certainly less expensive than most of the other big names.

.243 for deer hunting out to 350 yards

I think Roninflag hit it square on the head. If you choose the Rem 700 SPS Varmint, at under $800, you have the advantage of a 26" barrel, which will give you a bit of extra muzzle velocity. A good scope for under $500? Several of them, i have found the Nikons to be good, and Nikon's SpotOn...

    Rebarreling remington 700

.280 Remington, if you want a factory 7mm cartridge, .280 AI if you handload, and it uses your .270 brass; duplicates 7mm Mag with less powder and barrel wear. 30-06 is always good, and more commercially available than anything else, but there is also .35 Whelen, for which there are several...

    338 Federal Quickload Help

I'm certainly no expert, but you may be a bit optimistic on your ballistics. What you quote is Federal's factory specs, out of a 24" barrel bolt rifle. With a 20 inch barrel, it might be more like 2600, maybe less, and likely even a bit less if it is an AR platform. In either case, it should...

Help me decide on new mid-range .308

I know I am a bit late on this, but nobody has mentioned CZ. The new Push Feed (not CRF)527 Sporter with either wood or synthetic stock is available in .308, 20.5" barrel, 1:10 twist, 7+ lbs w/o scope, under $800. My CZ rifles shoot well, and from all the reports I've read they all do.

    Actual bullet drop vs advertised

I found the 2-0-8-24 law on another forum. Most common hunting (and target) rounds follow it. If you zero at 200 yards, your bullet strike will be about 2" high at 100, 8" low at 300, and 24" low at 400. If you check the data, you will see that it is not far from correct, no matter what you...
