Wyoming, SE Montana, & Western South Dakota?

I hunt muleys, elk and antelope. 338 AM, 270 AM and 7mm-08 Striker for weapons. No kills with the Striker but have it all ready for this coming season. Billings, MT

magic,
I enjoy hunting all three myself also. I live in Gillette.
pd's?
BTW there is a 1K NBRSA match just outside of Missoula the last weekend of this month. Hope to be there on Friday afternoon and Saturday shooting several specialty handguns against the rifles @ 1k.
I'm preparing to be humbled by the rifle guys and have a lot of fun in the process:D.

XP, I also live in Gillette. I hunt deer, antelope, elk, moose, and any kind of varmints that can be found. Some days I will set up to do some LR rock shooting, and other days just cruise county roads looking for another victim. It seems here lately I just sit home wishing it would dry up.

Cinch,
Are there certain days of the week when it is easier for you to get out and shoot?
How far out of town (miles) do you typically go to set-up and shoot longer distances (400-1k)?

XP, I usually only get out on the weekends this time of year. When it gets a little warmer and lighter later, I sometimes run out after work. If you go out to Weston which is about 30-40 minutes north of town on N hwy 59, there is the National Grasslands. It is touch and go. There is a lot of land, but it is overrun with 4wheelers at times. Get a good BLM map and you can find some good places up there. My wifes family has a big ranch out by Rozet and that is where I usually go. Her grandfather died a year ago Dec and the land is kind of being fought over by family right now. Hopefully they have it settled soon. There is some good long range at Weston though. There is also some walk in areas along N hwy59 between Gillette and Weston near Cow creek rd where you can walk in a little ways and shoot. There are signs on the fences on the east side of the road and some pullouts to park in. We went out to Weston and shot the gong some at 500yrds two weekends ago. Wanted to go farther, but got too windy.

XPHunter, is that match in Msla for any rifle or cal limits? Good luck, don't think I can make it, darn fishing season.

PD's? Yep have em 10 miles from my house where I have a rifle range set up out to 1200 yds. Targets, dogs, target, dogs.

I'll be busy with son's baseball and my walleye tourneys for a few months but then back to shooting in Aug and Sept. Any leftover antelope permits and land to hunt there, would love to bring my son (13) out for a goat. He loves hunting. He wants an elk this year, hope he's ready for packing one out.

I'm not aware of caliber limits, but I honestly do not know NBRSA rules.
What part of Montana?
There have been a lot of left-over doe antelope permits the past couple of years. Where I can take my son antelope hunting, I do not have permission to bring others.
If you do some leg/phone work getting a place shouldn't be a problem. My son will turn 14 in May, so it looks like they are fairly close in age.

Billings

Son will be 14 in the end of June.

Any place to start calling on goat hunting? We hunted 12 miles south od Gillette 2 years ago, won a guided trip and son shot his 1st goat (1st big game animal)at 260 yds. One proud dad. All private and outfitted there.

Thanks!

Eastern MT

Live in Wibaux MT, grew up on a farm, ranch, hunt antelope, whitetail and mule deer, coyotes, prairie dog, and about any type of shooting sports I can get my hands on, still learning a lot about long range shooting, but have had success at longer ranges, we built a 1000 yard range on our place with steel targets in 100 yard intervals to 1000 yards. Have spent a lot of time out their. My long range rifle is a 7mm Rem Mag, built on a rem 700 action, 26" pac-nor select stainless barrel, muzzle brake, jewel trigger, tactical bolt knob, Mcmillan fiberglass stock, 6.5-20 Leupold LR with varmint hunter reticle for windage aiming points, shoot 168 bergers and 140 nosler BT, have killed game past 600 yards with this rifle, we use the exball ballistics program and click up all our elevation adjustments, we hold for wind using custom reticles or the varmint hunters reticle

Welcome Rel7mm,

I travel to eastern MT quite a bit, we'll have to do some shooting sometime. Are you still in We Bo? I have a 338 AM I need to shoot at 100 increments out to 1000 yds, really I'm going for 2500 yds, but need to learn the scope. Crosshairs are at 740 yds dead on with the 40 MOA base I have. I have a course set up, but it's not 100 yds each target.

Take care!

I have a little place east of Newcastle on the SD border, I hunt deer and turkeys in my back yard. Coyotes and Foxes from the porch, (they like my chickens). For just plain shooting I have a 300 yard range set up. Out of Newcastel on 450 is some pretty good PD shooting on the Thunderbasin National Grass Land, pretty good antelope hunting out there also.

Elk Mt (4 miles south of the house) has a few elk but its iffy and they made it part of a draw area this year. I like taking my horses to the Big Horns for elk hunting.

The best advantage I have is I can teach my grandkids to hunt on my property without having to worry about others. Same with teaching them to shoot, I can spend the extra time looking at their targets point out why what bullet went where with out holding up other shooter because I spend too much time studing targets.
