WY unit 61 Type 1 question

This is a wilderness tag and I was wondering if pack animals are necessary for a hunt in this area? Is the pack-in to where your chances are best of getting into animals just too far on foot or is it reasonably doable?

In my opinion, horses are a must for 61. I definitely wouldn't go in on foot. It's quite a ways in before you get to where the elk are. You don't necessarily have to pack in though. I've thought about just camping at the trailhead and riding in, hunting all day and riding back out.

Just remember if it is federally designated wilderness area Wy requires you either hire a guide OR hunt with a "resident guide".

Nonresident big or trophy game hunters are
required to have a professional or resident guide
if hunting big or trophy game in federally designated
wilderness areas. Anyone can choose to hire an outtter
while planning their hunt. If you are hiring an outtter,
make sure they are licensed with the Wyoming Board
of Outtters and Professional Guides.
A list of licensed outtters and guides is available
from the Wyoming State Board of Outtters and
Professional Guides, http://outtters.state.wy.us or by
phone at (800) 264-0981.
Landowners do not need a license from the Board
of Outtters while guiding or outtting on their
own land. Any resident possessing a valid big or trophy
game license may obtain a resident guide license from
the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. is license
authorizes the resident to guide up to two nonresidents
in a wilderness area per calendar year provided they do
not accept any compensation or gratuity.

This fall will be my first season as a Wyoming resident. I moved to the state last spring so that detail is covered. I'm just debating on where I should put in for.

I've been going back and forth on that also. Too many interesting areas... I can't make up my mind!

I didnt apply this year but this summer will apply for pp. I will have 3 points for deer and elk after this year what areas will this get me in to for next year with 3 points.

I guess it depends what you're looking for in an elk hunt, but 3 points will not get you into a 'prestigous' area. If I were you, I would keep accumulating points and don't forget to apply anyway. There's always a small chance you could get drawn from the random pool. 2% is better than 0%.
