I just put this together but it turned out a bit heavier than what I wanted so I'm considering selling it and starting over. It's a Rem 700 long action that has been trued and lugs lapped. It wears a stainless Brux 1:8 .284 barrel, 26" long and I had it threaded for a break in the event I wanted to put one on it. It has a cap on it now. This is a tight neck, meaning you have to turn the necks of your brass. It also has a Rifle-Basix trigger that is rated 6-oz to 1-1/2# and is factory set to break at 10 oz.
I have shot it in one 1000 yard match and very little load development, mainly to fire-form the brass (Lapua 6.5-284 which was necked up and turned). This gun has only 90 rounds through it. The original finish is on the action, and it has a few small blemishes. I had planned on Cerakoating it later. Barrel is obviously in the white. Stock is a Bell & Carlson M40 that my smith vented on each side and bottom and bedded.
The gunsmith that did this shoots 284 in F-class competition and really knows his stuff on the 284's. His reamer is designed specifically for the Berger 180's so that the base of bullet sits at the shoulder of the case when seated to touch the lands. This creates a relatively long neck and allows really good velocities from the 284. I chronographed it at 2850 with the 180's. I shot the 168's but did not chrono them.
This guns shoots amazingly accurate, like 1/4 to 1/3 MOA. At 400 yards, I had two bullets touching and a third bullet 1-1/4' out. At 100 it was literally one hole that I could barely detect was two bullets, like .290" and a third 1/2" that I felt didn't break quite when I wanted.
I want to sell the gun and stock and 100 rounds of prepared, once-fired brass but I will keep the scope, rings & base. I need $1600 + $30 shipping.
