WSMs/SAUMs and pressure?

I was recently talking with a guy at work that shoots a 270 WSM. He has a freind that reloads for him and told him that the WSM and SAUM cartridges "come up" to max pressure quicker than other rounds. (i.e. .5 grains of powder can put you from safe into the danger zone)

Since I've just started reloading for a SAUM I'm curious to see if anyone here has experinced this or even heard of it. Velocity at book max in mine is a little disappointing and I'm about to load up some at higher than max charges taking 1/2 grn. steps. Looking for a little reassurance I guess, want to make sure this isn't a bad idea.

Thanks in advance
Chris

Winmagman,

I have developed loads for several WSMs and from what I have see during load development, if your going from safe to dangerous loads in 1/2 grain of powder you are using powder that is far to fast in burn rate.

I generally use Rl-22 and H-4831 for the 300 WSM.

Rl-22, H-4831, Rl-25 and H-1000 in the 270 and 7mm WSM.

H-1000, Rl-25, Retumbo in the 6.5mm WSM.

If he is using the correct burn rate for the round, then I would say that the loads he is considering "SAFE" are to high in pressure to begin with.

Remember, this is not a huge case in capacity, around 60 to 68 grains of powder capacity depending on bore and bullet weight used. At time slightly more.

What is his criteria for reading excessive pressure?

Kirby,

Have you tried the wc872(?)[The ball powder you use in the allen mags] in the 6.5 wsm?

Thanks for the replies gents.

My first thought when I heard this was "BULL", but being relativley new to reloading and even newer to the shortmag case types I thought I'd be safe and ask instead of making a costly mistake.

I don't know this guy at all, just a freind of a coworker kind of thing. Heck, he may have less experince reloading than I do. Right now I'm using Re-22 and H4831sc but also have H1000 to try, so it sounds like I'm on the right track.

Thanks again guys
Chris

I have a 7mm saum and I load for it. I've been using H-1000 and H-4831 with 150 and 160 gr. bullets. I use H-4350 with 140 gr. bullets. I've had pressure signs but those loads were about maximum. 160 gr. factory loads had the most pressure of any load I've shot in my rifle. I have'nt seen extreme pressure jumps in my rifle either.

Chris,In my custom 300wsm the max loads come up alot quicker than other mags I load for and in the last couple of years I've shot just about ever powder in three rifles chambered for the 300wsm. I haven't heard anything about the Rem case. I've been reloading now for over 40yrs and that 300wsm I got is one of a kind. I finally settled on R-19 not much difference between R-22 but I get alittle better load density to bullet with R-19. Before I when with the 300wsm I looked real hard at the Rem case and I just about decided to AI that case but I just weaken is all I can say now. My 300wsm shoots great etc you just have to watch it around max loads and in my rifles it doesn't matter if your using H-4350,H-4831sc,R-22 I also switch primers between mag and large rifle plus brands. I've kind of put my 300wsm aside for now waiting to hear about a change in the case design that acouple of shooter are working on. I think Pacific has the reamer for a 300saumAI and may have the gunsmith just order that in and be done with the 300wsm case. Well good luck.
