I just picked up a Winchester Ranger 7mm Rem Mag from a neighbor of mine that has barely been shot. I was going to replace the stock and trigger on it and was looking for suggestions on stocks to look at. My budget is $300-400 or less. I'm almost thinking a stock from Boyd's might be something I will consider. And rarely do I see many stocks on the classifieds for sale for the Model 70's. What else should I take a look at?

B&C or HSN Precision

Boyd prairie hunter is very nice. Usually need to sand just a touch to make them fit well but really great feeling stock.

Being laminated they are pretty heavy
I have lightened one of their stocks by hollowing out the butt and the forearm, and the difference was significant. How much I lightened it I no longer recall, but I've posted about that rifle in the past, a Howa 1500 Mini in 7.62x39 built to be as light as I could easily make it. I could take more out of the butt in particular, but the balance now is good and I'm hesitant to change that.

I ordered a Stock's Wood stock with aluminum bedding block in it for a 308 varmint that I had. Very pretty stock but the block was not level and caused the action to tilt to the left. Wish it would have worked but I went with a composite M40 clone with aluminum block after that. It isn't purty but it shoots well.

Are you looking for something fancy or just a good stock? Don't forget to check Ebay, I got a new OEM stock for my Remington 700 for a really decent price. Had the rifle pillar bedded, floated barrel and a few other minor changes and it shoot sub moa and looks fantastic. You might find a nice stock for a model 70 there too.

Winchester after market stocks are hard to come by. In your price range, you'll do well with Boyd's or you might find something you like from Stocky's. I doubt you'll find a major mfr of glass or cf but if you shop diligently, you might.

Best wishes!

B&C

I got the B&C and put my M70 factory hunting rifle in it. It's got the aluminum bedding block, just bolted her in and shoots very well. Pretty pleased for 350 bucks.
