Are Remington 700 Varmint stocks and regular stocks the same? Can I use a heavy barrel on standard 700 stock if I lapp it for a heavy barrel or is to small?

It will depend on the stock. You'll want to measure the diameter of the barrel and then measure how wide the forend is on the stock. If it's wide enough and deep enough then you can remove material to make room for the barrel.

The barrel channel on the stock varies but if I'm not mistaking you are talking about the all plastic stock for the rem 700 adl varmint? 26 inch barrel in whatever caliber? To me, that is a standard stock, unless I'm incorrect in that understanding.

Next you can always try to open the channel to free float a larger barrel, or if it's the rifle I'm thinking about, probably needs to be opened up anyways because half the time you can stick a piece of paper in it even with the factory barrel, but, I can weaken the ridgitity of that stock possibly... I'm not a smith though, that's just what I think.

And aren't for sure how different the stocks are on standard and Varmint 700s,And how a stand stock would turn out if I lapped it for a heavy barrel.
I digress, wood isn't my area of knowledge and disregard my previous statement. I was thinking synthetic originally.

Something to look at before getting started. Do you have enough forearm to create a barrel channel wide and deep enough to properly fit and free float the barrel. I have fit and shaped many laminated wood stocks. I usually start with a 3 inch forearm and decide how much wood to leave depending on the barrel contour and the caliber of the gun. Larger caliber, the more wood I leave for strength. The long and short answer to your question is, yes it can be done. However, you may have to modify the stocks forearm so much that it will weaken the construct of the rifle. Here are a couple if done...

Did you proceed with this? If so, how did it turn out. I have been wanting to re-barrel a 700 BDL with a carbon barrel for years now. I have been hesitant to do it, because I can't find any success stories and don't want to ruin my stock experimenting. Does anyone know if the forearm of a BDL Varmint Special stock is the same width as a BDL Magnum?

I opened up a Rem. 700 BDL Varmint stock for a straight barrel (Diameter of action) for my brother, When he got his 22-250 re-barreled. I had enough wood to cut the larger channel and the wood was stiff enough that a business card would slide under the barrel with the rifle laying on sand bags in position to shoot.

I bought a 700 Rem. Varmint 223 Rem. with 1 of those Tupperware stocks. (A Cabela's special sale). The stock would not support the barrel on a rest. The rifle now wears an H&S Precision fiberglass stock with aluminum bedding block. It is a great shooter, 1/4" at 100M groups.
