I plan on loading the Hornady 208 Amax for my stock Savage 110 in .300 Win Mag. What powder do you recommend I start with? I am assuming something like Retumbo, IMR-7828 or H1000? Also, what about the new Endura powders from IMR (IMR-7977)? I believe they have a slow one in the bunch.

Thank You.

7828 SSC has given me the best mix of speed and accuracy for all of the calibers that I have tried it in.

I recently found 7977 locally, so I bought some to try out. Loaded up some STW rounds with it, but haven't gotten out to the range yet.

Not Savage 110 but 111F, got best group with 74g IMR7828SSC with 208 A-Max (Win Brass, CCI250) ... as always, work your way up to it slowly.

Funny that H1000 hasn't been mentioned.
I don't use 208s, but have used it with 190s and 215s.

Do you have a Hornady manual? Perhaps someone who does can chime in

I've tried H1000 in numerous calibers. The groups were not consistent for me. And the lot-to-lot consistency has been horrible, too.

Retumbo was another powder that has been finicky for me...I couldn't get it to group at all.

Thanks you guys. I appreciate the info. I have to say I am a little surprised, as I thought one of the newer powders would be more popular. I used to use IMR-7828 by the boatload in my old 300 Weatherby. Maybe the more things change, the more they stay the same?

With the shorter barrel you may find that H4831 may prove to better than the slowest powders that longer barrels run well with. The 4955 is the enduron closest to H4831 as far as the burn rate/ pressure/velocity.
