Which factory 308 Win

What factory 308 Win would you buy ?
Looking for rig to do alot of practice with, so as not to burn up my magnums.
Thought a 308 would be a good cal, as I have alot of large rifle primers, and no small rifle primers.
Up in the air as to which brand and model, and neccesary barrel length. Also, some models only come with a 1:12 twist, which I dont know would stabilize the 175gr SMK. Have done a search, but did not come up with to much.
Opinions requested.

My list would be:

Savage--great out of the box accuracy.

Rem 700 small block chevy of guns..Also shoot well out of the box.

Howa 1500. great accuracy, not many after market stuff but getting better.

Tikka T3, Great accuracy,

I can not go wrong with any listed above, just find one that you can get a good deal and get good glass!

I was looking at Savage. Would you go with their Weather Warrior, or the LE model ?

I like the LE ones better due to the stock. I like the HS or Mcmillan stock better.

But you can always buy the less expensive one, and go to sharp shooter supply and buy a stock from them for about the same price as the LE model.

The 700 PSS and 5R are always sure bets for good shooters. The PSS is a 26" 12x and the 5R is a 24" 11.25x

To answer your question about the 12x and 175's, the 12x is very optimum for the 175 SMK's and 178 AMAX's. You will find stability factors of about 1.5 with the 12x and 175-180 grain pills at 308 velocities. It will also handle the 190 SMK's or VLD's and most 200 grain bullets.

IMHO, a 26"12x barrel is perfect for the 308. I have also had great success with the 24" 11.25x.

My 308 is at the shop right now getting a 26" 11.0x barrel installed. I plan on shooting 190VLD's and 208 AMAX's out of her.

you haven't read my posts yet than lol! I can safely say I will never own another savage again. I have a 12 fv 22-250 that only shoots 1.5 inch at best consistantly and worse yet, I have ejection problems with it. Sent it in and had it re-barreled and accuracy is the same, ejection is the same. Their customer service is good, but their quality control leaves something to be desired IMO. My vote would be for the same list minus the savage.

Savages are good too, no doubts there.

As far as remington quality issues, I will admit it does suck, however, their rifles continue to shoot extreemly well for a factory sticks. As long as they shoot straight, I will continue to use and recomend them. Never shot a remington that didnt shoot good. On the other hand I have shot factory sticks that the quality and craftsmanship was near flawless and they still shot like poop.

Last week I was out helping a friend of mine develop loads for his new 700 300 RUM in SPS. None of the 3 test loads were over 1 MOA. The best was sub .8 MOA. Not too bad for a cheap out of the box factory rig without a free floated barrel in a very light weight and cheap format.

BTW, yes, I am a 308 fan!

My choice would be the Savage [FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Model 10FCP-K. It has 24" barrel, an oversized tactical bolt, 1.5 lbs adjustable accutrigger, Savage muzzlebrake, and accustock on 2009 models. It can be had for around $750.00 retail[/FONT]

I own the Savage 10FP with the H.S. Precision stock (L.E. model) and I'm extremely happy with the rifle in .308.

I have been 'tuning' my reloading to find a good set-up and just discovered the Hornady 178Grain A-Max are Fabulous with a capitol 'F'

The 10FP and it's 1in10 rifling is just right for that weight for sure.

If you think the 178 and 10x works fabulous, you should try the 208-220's.

It seems like the 1:10 twist would be the way to go if shooting heavier than 175gr, but have not thought about that. . Kevin Cram posted that he couldn't get 175gr to shoot out of his 1:12 twist, so 1:12 might be borderline. I want to shoot at least 168-175gr, and now maybe try the heavier ones as per Michael's recomendation, so 1:10 is probably the way to go. Only offered in a few models., so back to the drawing board to narrow it down.
