7mm Rem Mag, .280ai, or .284 Win? I want a long range deer rifle with the ability to kill a elk if needed. It seems the .280ai is getting close to the same velocity as the 7mm Rem Mag., Not sure on anything about to .284 win. I really don't want a muzzle brake, 26" barrel max

Well, I am a big bullet guy...not sure if the 280 AI will stay with the 7mm Rem mag with the 168-175-180 grain bullets.

On the other hand, I am an accuracy guy...but have never owned a 280 AI to compare with the bigger 7. From what I understand the 280 AI is very accurate. To be fair, ALL 280 AI's are custom, and should be accurate!!!! Most 7mm rem mags are factory.

I've had a 7mag since 1988. I ultimately customized it about 10 years ago. I just had another 7mag built about 2 years ago.

I wouldn't hesitate to get another. BUT, I'm very interested in a 7WSM. I think that is a caliber you should seriously consider for your described hunting purposes.

I'm having a 284 win built right now. After reviewing the info on 6mmbr.com it is obvious the 284 is a contender.

Almost 3000 fps with a Berger 180 and rl17 sounds like a winner to me.

I just went through a comparable dilema recently. I was looking for an all around cartridge capable of elk or the like someday.

I have a 280 ai on order....

A 280ai is NOT a 7mag. Yes you may be able to duplicate factory 7mag loads with a 280ai by handloading. but you can also out do the 280ai handloads with 7mag handloads.

I guess the fact i could get close to 7 mag performance in a standard case with less recoil was intriguing to me. the cool factor of the ai might also have played into it as well.

From the sound of it....if I were you Id pick the 7mm Rem Magnum

What would probally be the max range on deer with a .280ai be?

If John Burns can have a hunter with him take a cow elk at 688 yards with a 243 and a 105 gr Berger VLD, then I'd opine that a 280AI COULD be a 1000 yard elk rifle so deer should not be a problem.

I know no one has commented on my case for the 284.

It has the same capacity as the 280 but in a shorter round.

This will allow you to seat VLDs to the lands in a long action without worrying about running out of room.

Jerry Tierney won the 1,000 yard NBRSA with a straight 284 win.

A 180 Berger going 2950fps will carry more than enough energy to take deer past 1,000 yards

I am in the process of getting a 284 imp built. My buddy built one and does very well with his. He is smacking my 12 x 14 inch plate at 1460 yrds. He designed the reamer for this one. He is shooting a moderate load of 4831 sc and running the 180 berger hybrid at 2850 fps. I am going to run the 162 Amax hopefully at 3000fps which I don't think there will be a problem.

That sounds interesting. The original 284 was designed with the same capacity as the 280. If you improve it, you should have the same capacity as the 280ai with the benefit of excellent brass choice and plenty of room in the action to run heavy bullets through the mag.

I like it :-D

No way. 284win is more like 3000 with 140s, 2850 with 162Amax, maybe 2700 with 180VLDs. Long barrels do help though, and new powders are showing us new things.

284winAI? It already has a 35deg shoulder and almost no body taper, what the hell are they Improving?
