I want to venture into shooting far, I have a 2.5-8x36mm Leupold. This is a sporter weight rifle but I would think I could shoot out to 450yds with it?

Point blank on a 284win w 150gr bullet is approx 325yds, (along with a 270win 140gr bullet) which I use the definition of +/-3" of zero, dead hold = 6" kill zone

I can't afford larger scopes or better gear right now,

I'm wondering what I can expect.

I watched someone online shooting a 30-06 sporter 150gr to 400 yards w great results. That was impressive to me. When I say great results, I don't know or hang out w guys here in the Northeast that shoot further than 200yds.
He was very confident w the 06 as a 400 yard game getter.
I'd like to get that type of confidence.

Right now my confidence ends about 225yds.

One of the last times I fired my rifle I had perfect wind age and 1" high at 175yds. I was extremely pleased w that.

I would say for you long range starts at 225 and ends at wherever you are no longer able to make hits. That distance will increase with practice. I can assure you that practice is more important than equipment.

Once I put a target out at approx 300yds and found a pizza box sized group below my target on my cardboard.

Did that after all this talk about the 284 and had to know.
I was pleasantly surprised that day too.

Just the fact that there was a 10" group THERE, on my target, was enough to be excited about for shooting off a balled up sweatshirt on a bench.

Got my kid a rangefinder for xmas, so we are going on the adventure together!

It's actually a defined thing. 550-600y for centerfire rifles is long range. That is because that's the point where atmospheric conditions start to play effect on the bullet to a degree where you need to account for it.

Even the Marine Corps regular annual rifle qual ends there at 550y. That's because typically in doctrine, beyond that is where DMs and snipers would then be implemented for the reasons I mentioned.

F class considers 800y the start of "long range."
Opposite of that, PRS will follow the 600y situation more typically but the targets are smaller and there's no spotter shots. You sink or swim.

Edit: "long range" based on these definitions is very much a gear game and an expensive endeavor. I wish there was better news on that front.

ELR forum starts at 1000Y. LR is under 1000Y, and you can decide what that range is.

Was 500 yards in my mind back when I started, it's 400 now cause practice is harder and my skills haven't improved with age....

I think (two scary words that proceed the rest of the statement) anything over 500 yds, But if you are stretching your limitations and continue to shoot farther and farther eventually you will find a range for you that is long range. Especially if you are enjoying the day behind a good rifle hahaha. Oh and don't forget it is also caliber dependent after all a 22LR isn't a 500 yard gun yet. Just my opinion on all this after all its fun talking with all ya'll about this stuff. Right!

I'm thinking five hundred yards for hunting without special equipment, that's past just crosshairs on the line of the back hold.
Watched a friend use his 30-06 to kill a doe at 775 yards using a Nikon BDC reticle. 1st shot went high. It spooked the doe who moved to the impact point of shot number one. You can figure out what happened next.

I verify zero and drops with hits on 8" steel gongs out to 600 yards whenever I go out west to hunt. This is with sporter weight rifles. I usually run a 7mm RM or 300WM but I've done it with 270 Win and 308 Win as well. The rifle and cartridge will usually get you there. Glass on top becomes important.

IMO anything that pushes oneself is " Long Range" Per this site ELR starts at a K so anything so anything past 100 yards once again IMO is "Long Range"

"What is Long Range"…that is very subjective in my opinion. However, for most skilled SHOOTERS I would say anything past that 600 or 700 yard mark.
