I found this old round at a customers home this past week. Husband was a reloader but I don't think this is a hunting round. Any ideas? Look at end of round . has 42 stamped on it.
It looks like something I saw once made from a 50 BMG fired case, the top would pull off (the bullet) and it was a cigarette lighter, the old style with a wick and a flint
The primer is spent and the bullet looks larger than the case neck. Unless it has a heel type bullet. But it still should be the same diameter as the OD of the case neck. I'm in agreement with JKB57. If it's not a lighter it could a cool ball point pen. Have you tried to pull the bullet real hard?
50 BMG came in a number of configurations - Tracer, armour piercing, even exploding I think, and they usually had a colour coding to tell which was which but the coding could wear off over time. Be careful with it.
The outside diameter of the bullet is bigger than the case neck I would almost bet that the cap pulls off and there is a lighter or pen under it,it may be tight or rusty but I did have a couple of these my dad had after world war II they were souvaniers made up after the war
Not a live round. My Dad was a belly gunner on a B-17 in WWII and he made salt and pepper shakers from two spent rounds. Even those didn't have an oversized "cap" bullet.
Appears to be an old 50 cal "ink pen" or similar conversion. Does the bullet top twist? Have a hole in the tip? Is it removable?
I've seen all sorts of things made from brass casings.
