What happens when you use a 270 win in a 30-06

I got a ring from a mate who had cartridge stuck in his 270 parker hale rifle.
He had loaned the rifle to a nephew and he returned it with the stuck cartridge.
He asked me if I could help.
I tried dropping a cleaning rod down the barrel, then gently tapping the Rod but still nothing. The Mauser bolt would not close and the extractor would not clip over the rim of the cartridge. My mate said he thought the chamber might have been dirty and had tried a length of number 8 wire to hit the cartridge out.
I tried filling the barrel with thin oil and tapping a wooden dowel down to hydraulic
It out but still no success.
Then I remembered my old Mauser bolt that I had altered the extractor so I could load single shots without the magazine.
I used the bolt and a sharp hit backwards and out came the cartridge.
Not a 270 but a 308 with the bullet wedged off on a angle and almost back in the case.
Someone had had a good go at it before me.
So just as well a 308 won't fully chamber in a 270

I've seen a person fire a 308 in their 06 once. Dip stick went into the store, guy says what caliber is your rifle. He said 308 (that is the bore diameter, right?), gets 308s and fires them. I saw the case come out and said, wth, looks like a wierd 458. Picked it up and knew what he'd done. Made him stop, and go back in and get the right ammo. BIGgest problem is, doing that more than once or twice can cut your chamber inside, and mess your rifle up. Have seen that too. Guy had to have his gunsmith set the barrel back a bit and rechamber it to get the cut area out.

I have a friend who a few years ago, was showing me a round he'd fired in his 280. Look, it blew the primer, etc. We looked at it a while, and I measured it and etc., and it looked like a 280. Got home and called him and said, aren't your 280s nickle plated brass. Yeah? and your 270s aren't. Yeah. You do realize this is a non plated case, right? He'd shot a 270 in his 280. Since the 270s is shorter than the 280, it had head space problems, and let the primer blow. Didn't make him feel real smart, but made him feel better to know the ammo wasn't at fault. I think the 280 was made a bit longer than the 06, and 270 to keep it from chambering in rifles of those calibers.

I sighted in guns for a local gun shop once and the owner gave me a new gun to sight in with a box of 270win ammo. I shot several guns that day so I wasn't paying too much attention to that particular gun. When I shot it at 50 yards I was about 6" to the right of the bull. The hole looked funny in the scope , but I brushed it off as a paper tear. The 2nd through the 4th didn't hit the target at all. I figured at this point to take a closer look. The hole in the target was completely sideways as was one other that hit way off the target. That is when I looked at the gun and realized it was an 30-06. Now I had about 6 rounds formed fired for a 06.

I have been there when a friend tried to fire .223 in his AR 15 in 6.8 SPC and thankfully it let him know by the bolt not closing. I bought a project gun stamped 300 Win Mag, so once ready to site it in and going to close the bolt and it not closing on the 300 Win Mag, a chamber casting showed it was 308 Norma Mag. The good news there was that the 308 Norma was costly enough it got me into reloading and I have enjoyed that ever since:D. But my best story was having walked a half mile in, in the dark and sitting down and going to chamber a round and thinking hey wait a minute where is the belt? I was carrying my 7mm RM and my nephew had sat his 270 ammo in a similar box with my ammo in my truck where I keep mine instead of where he was to keep his. So thankfully all it cost me was a quick walk of another mile and I learned my lesson to not just check and double check but right before you walk in or load check one more time.

I load 22-250 for my dad and nephew and 22-250 AI for myself and 6mm for dad and 270 for me and for my nephew and several other rounds that are similar. I use red boxes for them and green for me and try to use different head stamped brands of brass for the different ones but the sharpy marks are another good way to differentiate the similar loads. But still I guess the best insurance is to check every time. Sure fire forming some of their brass to AI would not be the end of the world, especially since I buy it for them anyway, but it is good practice to keep everything else straight too, right? And are there any other good ideas for additional differintiating for similar rounds that works for others?

cbpilot, do you realize what you did was illegal? There is no "we" have licenses, it's you have tags and he has tags. You do not shoot someone elses animal. I hope you are done doing that, I have no use for people who think my tags are theirs, and also the ones who shoot everything they see.

Jeff, you came down kinda hard on me for what you though was correct but actually is incorrect.
We were hunting antlerless whitetails in a zone (& a year) which allowed non-resident (& I have to assume - resident) hunters to party hunt. We were allowed to harvest 4 antlerless whitetails on our two licences. I had shot three (the third was after he yelled at me to shoot since he didn't have a good shot at one that he'd scared out of a woods island) during the 1st two days. After my dad had so much trouble with sighting, resighting and resighting again he told me to shoot a fourth for him on the last day unless he got one. We both wanted to go home with our 4 deer so when I had the chance, I took it. The 4th deer was taken with only an hour or less of our season and my dad was happy that I got the shot.

I don't "shoot everything that I see" nor do I EVER take a deer on someone else's license unless they want me to - IN ADVANCE. I've deer hunted for 54 years and have turned down 100's of easy shots because it wasn't the deer that I wanted that season or the shot wasn't a sure thing. I don't take chances with tough shots due to the percentage that I might miss or - worse - wound an animal and lose it. During these past 5 weeks of archery I have not released a single arrow at a deer. I've had 3 chances for perfect shots but decided to pass. I grabbed my camera instead and took some great videos and stills. I'm not worried about taking 1 or 2 deer this year. I'm just waiting until "it feels right".

I'm still not sure why you came down on me so hard but I doubt that the forum managers approve of your tone.

I'm sorry, not picking on you but, Montana allows license application as a party but DOES NOT allow party hunt (in other words, fill your own tag(s) only, that's the one with your name on it lightbulb) even on a damage hunt.

It's still illegal to take a deer on someone else' license even if they want you to and told you in advance, esp. if you've been deer hunting for 54 years. Bottom-line, you can only fill your own tag(s) legally ... regardless.

Again, I'm sorry but I'm with Jeff ... Montana has lots of space and game to share with but I've seen way too many out-of-staters as well as residents (and yes, I've reported them) that ruins it for others. I might be wrong but I think that's what Jeff is trying to point out. :D:):rolleyes:gun)

Cheers!

I was going to ask that Ed, was it a damage control hunt and what were the regs in the area for that? We have only recently started the control hunts in our area and the tags are given to the effected land owner to dole out as he sees fit, within what the game management has allotted him. So here in Western Oklahoma that has only recently become available to do population control where all you need is the tags, but those are very few and only with the land owner showing the need and being evaluated on a case by case basis. But I have talked to a land owner/producer(farmer) who was given a number of these tags and the way he explained it to me he handed them out to whom he chose. And in his case that was the group of hunters that leased his property but they were not designated by name, only that they possessed one of the tags.

Again that is only a very recent occurance here. We have some similar regulations that can help control the wild hog population. It is now just helping to ensure safety and that no meat is going to waste. But they are pretty liberal on how and by whom they are taken once all of the situation is assesed proven it qualifies for this type of control management.

At first glance it looked like he was talking about the old, "we are going mule deer hunting in an area that has a few elk lets all pitch in and buy an elk tag and if anybody gets one we will tag him with that tag," kind of thing. And I would have thought that had I not just last year for the first time become aware of situations for population control where circimstances are different. But you are from there so you would know.

I'm sorry that I seem to have created a controversy on this web forum. I certainly didn't intend for that to happen. My purpose was only to relay a true story of what actually happened when my dad used my .270 Win. ammo in his .30-06 Springfield chambered rifle.

As to the controversy (which has nothing to do with what this thread is supposed to be about)........ :
After thinking more about the time frame, I believe it was in the mid to late 80's when we hunted in eastern Montana. We hunted on a friend's ranch (3500+ acres) who had had major crop damage to his hay stacks throughout his land. The deer would eat a tunnel into these garage-sized stacks during the winter and then the stack would collapse on top of them. The deer would eventually die and rot. The cattle refused to eat the hay due to the odor so the entire stack was ruined and worthless.

To get back to the "controversy" of party huntng..... I couldn't find my original regulations from 30+ years ago but I believe in my heart that the regs for that hunt allowed party hunting and the rancher/friend that we stayed with said it was the way they hunted, also. I'm a law-abiding hunter and try NEVER to break or even stretch the law. My dad was the same way and instilled in me a deep respect for game laws and game wardens.

This forum (specifically JeffP40

I wish the moderators would pick up on such things and respectfully ask the thread participants to refrain from such disrespectful activities. I wish all of you on Long Range Hunting the best but I'm bowing out of this thread and this forum. I've blocked this site so all items will now go to my spam folder & be automatically deleted.

Cbpilot,

Name calling and disrespectful? Where?

If you think it has nothing to do with the OP, why did you introduce the controversy.

Wow, just 3 posts and out you go. Happy safe hunting.

A friend's friend has a ranch that has an easement with the FWP that we regularly hunt whitetails and often help out, mostly mending fences. They had a damage hunt during archery season to take out a certain number of whitetails by any means legal for the area ... and was supervise by a game warden/FWP rep.
