What .284 rifle to build

Pretty surprising my LA 284s with RL17 runs the 180s at 3000 fps. That's rivaling factory 7mm mag ammo performance. Still not much below reloaded 7mm mag performance. RL17 is pixie dust in the 284s. Much less powder and recoil as well
Not with same barrel lengths unless your way over pressure. Currently I'm running a 180 eld at 3037 fps with rl-26 in a sammi reamer with a 26in. If a 284 is getting that kind of velocity in a 26in barrel then your playing with fire.

28" barrel and zero pressure issues. Using it in my SA 284 with a 2.975 OAL with 168s and getting 3000 fps. Same deal, no pressure. Amazing powder and accurate to boot. Some say it's much harder on barrels. Maybe. But hunting rifles can handle it. I'm not saying it's quite as fast and shouldn't be. Just saying for the difference in velocity vs powder and recoil, I'll stick with my 284. For the heavier 195s, maybe a bigger case makes more sense for sure.

My buddy has a LA 284. If I remember correctly he used rl-26 with the 180 eld and was running around around 2850. I'm not knocking it. I love the 284, but barrel length for barrel length, the 7mm rem mag is going to out run the 284 when at equal pressure.

On a side note, rl-17 eats barrels for breakfast. I burnt up a 6.5 creed barrel in 1700 rounds by using rl-17. You can get some great velocities with it though.

I have a 284 Win with 0.208FB and a 26" Bartlein. With a 175gr Elite Hunter loaded to 3.170" COAL, I hit pressure around 2900 with RL23. With the 180gr ELD I tried RL26 and pressured out around 2900fps. I run my loads around 2820-2840 now. It shoots good there with no pressure issues.

Agreed but even at 1000 rounds for a hunting rig, it'll last forever

1000 rounds is alot of hunting thats for sure!
Think I have 800 on my SA 284 and still sub half MOA. No long stings, never gets too hot. My LA 284 is right at or around 1500-1600 but i load H4831 and RL17. It probably has 800+/- rounds of each. Wouldn't use 17 of I shot matches. It's not that accurate. H4831sc is the most accurate I've used in them. Also slower than most

Since this is the modern era and not 30 years ago, use a modern, unbelted cartridge, that is of outstanding quality and accessible without an overly long delay in getting them.

Don't do obscure wildcats, unless you'v the patience, time and energy.

Start with 284 Win, 280AI, Shermans, 28 Nosler, if looking for mid to magnum case capacity. Even though, it was my favorite killer of all things hooved, I wouldn't recommend the 7STW, unless you'v a stockpile of 8REM Mag brass!

Edit: the 7RUM would be a good one also, for the current time, because there's more powder and bullet choices than when it was introduced, and, cases are easily made from 300RUM, that's what I had to do, 7RUM cases were non-existent.

A caliber that I've just lately been interested in is the 7 WSM. Mostly because I want it to fit in the short action that I own and work with the 8 twist 7mm barrel about to arrive. From what I've seen thus far it's not a common or popular chamber.
UN-Fortunately, the 7mm WSM is almost, Obsolete and HAS been, Supplanted by, the .300 and .270 WSM's,.. in Popularity !
When my .270 WSM goes "South", I will Re- barrel / Re-chamber to, the 7MM- .270 WSM with, a 1-8.3 Twist, to shoot the 165's to 180's for, Elk.
.270 WSM Brass, Necked up ( NO Doughnuts ) with, the WSM length Neck is, a VERY accurate Cartridge that's, used in England and Canada for 1,000 Yard Competition. Hopefully, I can stand, the Recoil, LOL ! The .270 WSM with, 140 Berger's at almost, 3,200 FPS, IS, a good Elk Slayer, as IS, tho !
The longer/ Heavier, .284 Bullet, HAS "enviable" BC's for, the Longer Ranges and the .270, 140 gr. does,.. NOT !
I really LIKE, the WSM's, Case Design, Strength and Powder Capacity !
