Website offers bullet test load packs

Strange... really strange... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

They think we're supposed to be able to tell with five bullets whether our rifles "like" that bullet?

Wow... I don't know what else to say about that... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Green:

You're probably right in general terms but there have been times where I have loaded 5 rounds using a "proven" recipe and that showed some potential.

For example if I load for the 270 WIN I load around 60 gr of H4831 (130 gr). I can usually tell (not always) what potential that bullet has in my rifle.

Another way to look at it is you spend $6 for 15 bullets you make 5 (3 shot loads) again to see potential. Better than spending $20 plus for a box and getting stuck with half of it.

You're right about the proven load recipes... I list several of them on my OCW website. They work.

Of course we're supposed to work up to max charge when we switch components...

Probably ten bullets (I guess you could just buy two sample packs) would be enough to pressure test first, then fire five for group.

You don't have to buy only 5 bullets. You can buy 10 or 15 0r 20 or whatever increment of 5 you want. I think it beats the pants off of having to buy 100 or 50 of some bullet only to find out you don't really want that one.

Makes all kinds of sence to me. I hope they offer more bullets. I have a friend that wants to try a couple of 7mm bullets but can't afford to go skipping down the bullet aisle trying this brand and that brand. This might be a good option for him.

Besides, if we know what the optimal charge weight for a 160 grain bullet is then wouldnt a 5 shot group be enough to tell if they will work. Sort of like the Federal premium match grade ammo works so well in so many guns. This is the crux of finding the optimum load isn't it?

That's basically true, but to be on the safe side you'd have to work up to the charge with the bullet in question. Some bullets will have a longer bearing surface (more of the jacket is touching the bore), and some will have harder jackets which could run the pressure up a bit. But if the bearing surfaces are the same, or very close, and the jacket hardnesses are comparable, the same powder charge will often work fine for like bullets...

I think its a great idea. You can buy as many test load packs as you need. I do alot of test loading, and this web site could save a guy a lot of money.Has any one e-mailed the site to find out what they will be adding next,as I also seen on the web site that they will be adding bullets and different calibers often.

I also think its a great idea. I dont know how many boxes I have that are half shot, or 10-20 missing from a 50 or 100 count box. kinda waste of money, but I guess thats our fault, or the guns! Ha ha ha, I think it would save quite a bit of money as well. Not all guns shoot the same, even if its the same brand of rifle shooting the same bullet, still have to work up your load for your rifle. All rifles are different. Haven't checked the site out, but I would say 10 bullets of each would be a better idea. I usually do 3 shot groups with each powder, and do 3 loads, so thats 9 shots.
