Can someone please help with first timer build tips? I want to use a Howa barreled action. And a MacMillan stock. It my first build and im looking for guidance. Thanks, Ryan

First thing to consider is what chambering you are considering? Lately brass availability is a very big issue. IMO get the components in your hands before you try to build the rifle.

+1

1. Consider the chambering in the aspect of caliber and ability to fire it frequently and learn to shoot in the wind etc. Barrel burning calibers are not good to learn on for example as a first build. What type of ranges or matches are near you to allow you to shoot?

2. Get all your parts together first. too many guys drop a gun off at a smith and have them order parts for the next year and then go into a 6-12 month build window. You can find all your needed parts quite easily off the internet now without having to wait months and months for it to be ordered.

3. Order and keep your own reamer so when you rebarrel, you can have the same chamber dimensions.

Like I said, I'm very new to this, with that said, I figured .308 win. Because of its potential and availability. I want to shoot 1000 yds but don't want to have trouble finding ammo....

Rather than build, Howa already has some pretty good heavy barreled 308s that shoot great and at way less than a custom build will be. I shot a stock heavy barrel howa 308 in steel matches for a couple years and all I did was bed it and put a timney trigger on it.

I would buy one of those and put my money into reloading and shooting.

I would use the Sierra 175's either tipped or not tipped SMKs and go for it.
