I v been playing with a 4-16x50 hs but non Lr model if that helps, Bit of a read here if you like.

yawn, thanks for the link, just trying to clarify about the turrets. the pictures you've posted are of the non-long range version? the turrets seem to be usable for long range application. does the elevation turret move up as it is rotated exposing more lines so you know which revolution you're on? this version has the 1/4 moa adjustments also? to be honest i think i like this one better. the long range has .5 moa adjustments and the turret is exposed. thinking of putting one of these on my 6wssm for a long range practise gun.

Dave yes .25 moa adjustment and it has graduated lines on the turret to indicate which revolution you are on.I use a stock pack with a zip pocket so I'v gotten into the habbit of putting the turret cap in the poket if I neen to remove it but I can cover most of my normal hunting with this with rifle with the BDC reticle.Be aware though it is very fine if you hunt alot in low light

I'm looking to put this scope on my dpms sass is the reticle thick or thin if i'm shooting long range about 400yrd.

Mate the thin section of the reticle is .08 moa on 16x so at 400 yds it would cover about 1/3 of an inch.The reason I mentioned it is because in low light conditions it came be hard to pick up. Im talking well after sunset here not just an overcast day.
had an opportunity to use one this weekend. mounted it on .223. not overly impressed, glass is "ok", but NOT a "high grade" by any means. Reticle is to thin for any kind of long range work, i lost the hash marks a couple times against the background. .5 moa clicks on elevation are not fine enough for pdog shooting. over all, not as good as the NIKON .223 3-12 (BDC) that I also used. I think, for the money, there are better scopes available.

I just dont like the super fine cross hairs. I am thinking about a Viper PST, but I just cant bring my self to choose it over the SWFA SS
I don't own one yet but my buddies have three rifles with the 4x16 HS long range viper. We have shot them several times out to 1000yds. And hunted with them this fall. Optics are good, eye relief is very good, I feel the fine cross hair allows a more precise hold at long range and I prefer the 1/2moa elevation adjustments over 1/4moa.
With most long range loads you can dial to 1000yds with one revolution or close to it. The scope has a lot of elevation travel and depending on the cartridge a canted base is usually not a requirement to get to 1000yds. Scope also has zero stop so you don't get lost on the dial.
It is also a fairly compact scope in overall length and looks well proportioned on a sporter weight hunting rifle.
I will be replacing the 6x24 viper on my 7RM with one of these in the near future. If you shop around they can be had for $429.
