I just weighed the complete rifle (with out scope) yesterday and it came out right on 7.0 pounds even-- the barreled action is a 24" win 70 super shadow wsm -- but I haven't weighed just the stock alone yet-- i installed pillars but haven't finished the rest of the bedding job yet.

When we built our house, the kitchen floor is hickory of several different widths. So decided to cut a piece down for a loading block. DANG is this stuff hard as heck! Even my cutoff saw didn't like it. The planks came with 7 coats of poly so it never has to be resurfaced. It still looks as good as the day it was put down 16 years ago.

I went at it a bit differently, I hollowed out the buttstock with spade bits (& an extension) and long shank carbide burrs, and I dropped a 2 flute end mill into the forearm channel taking material out of the sides and the bottom while not disturbing the top edges of the channel. I forget the weight results from each step, but the scoped Howa Mini is a shade over 6.5 lbs. loaded.

I built a 6.5saum last 2 weeks. I could have built it in 3 days but then what would I do. I also painted a bald eagle in watercolor. Starting a fox and kingfisher now.

Seen/heard of people doing the spade bit into the butt thing, also heard of nightmares of the bit not being true and wandering off center-- mine adds some aesthetics (as long as you like the look) -- inspiration came from the coyote outback laminated rifle from around '08

Mine is actually the super shadow- win lists it as 6 pound 12 oz stock, I replaced the plastic trigger guard with an aluminum one, and the 7.0 pounds is with the 2 piece alum pic rails atached and the mbm brake so I'm guessing the weight is a few ounces less than stock but it feels much sturdier than the plastic stock

I pickedup the stock for $80 so I figured - wth might as well play a bit-- the Boyd's stock for the blind mag rifles arent as thick so I ended up having to shorten the internal box-- 3 rounds will fit but the bolt wont cycle over them so it's now a 2+1 -- the original barrel is not free floated so I hope this helps tighten groups up a bit.

I've always made my own loading blocks and shell holder caddies but mine are just utilitarian pine-- I love to look at nice woodworking projects.

OK, weighed the stock last night-- as it sits, no butt pad or sling studs but finished the aluminum pillars and bedding it is 28 ounces--I could have taken a bit more weight out of the front below the barrel, but that would be a bunch more work for probably an ounce or less in weight drop, might be able to drill up into the palm swell but once again, risk messing up what I have already done for an ounce or less, I'm done with it other than adding a grind to fit limb-saver, studs, and finishing the wood with true-oil
I kept the "hunk" of laminate that I cut out of the butt and am saving it for some knife handle scales for a future project--- I have found laminate wood scales to be a good material for hunting knives
I did find a broken screw head on the front weaver rail section while the scope was off, so I'm going to fix that-- it had a very slight wiggle to it--hopefully between the screw, a good bed job, and a totally free floated barrel it will tighten up its groups for me now as I really want to like the 7wsm cartridge.
