Like Bravo 4 said they will be on sale at all sporting goods stores. You can find them from $60 up to $300. I would recommend going and trying on a couple before buying. I always look for a comfortable cushion, quiet material and lots of pockets in that order. I'd stay in the low to middle price range until he is sure he will stick with it. He can upgrade things as he gets more involved.
