The Sako and Ruger concept for scope mounting is sound. Build into the top of the receiver notoches or grooves so that the scope mount can clamp down hard, gipping for dear life. There are no threads to strip. With this approach you are not limited to 6-42 or 8-40 screws. The screw diameter is only limited by how beefy the rings are.

But with rifles that don't allow this you still have four screw holes on the top of the receiver. I like the one piece scope bases that are drilled for ALL FOUR screw holes. This is a strong system. These bases are not so popular, however.

Can anybody recommend a brand and model of the single piece, four screw base that is still made? Thank you in advance, gentlemen, for your thoughts.

Lots of options for a picatinny rail. A pic rail along with a quality set of rings are more than strong enough for pretty much any hunting rifle / scope combo. The pic rail mounts onto the receiver with 4 screws typically. Steel or Aluminum will work, personally I use steel rails and aluminum rings. There are many manufacturers to chose from for the rail and the rings. I prefer NF XTreme Duty rings mounted to a pic rail, but there are many brands that work well.

The only mount I ever had trouble with was on my Thompson Center Encore Pro Hunter in 500 S&W. Bellm TC fixed that up for me, added a couple more screws on the pic mount, I think I ended up with 5 total. I have never had an issue with rings and try to use pic mounts when possible. Nothing else has ever giving me issues and I have used Leupold, Talley, EGW, Nightforce and probably several others. From 375 H&H, 45/70, 300 Win mag. I wish I could remember ones that used for screws but that is more tied to the receiver that the manufacturer of the mounts.
