It looks like it's time to finally put the 1 Gun idea to rest,,, so the plan going forward for me is to utilize what I own and turn 2 of my rifles into twins,,, sort of that is.

I'm not sure how other folks go about this,,, but scale-ing back the gun safe is now underway. The nice thing is that the 2 cartridges I have on the go are 30/06 and 308,,, looks like the 308 is going to be the Weiner. LOL.

Probably because I have 1200+ cases,,, an endless supply of 30 caliber boolitz,,, 3 cabinets of primers in large rifle and small for the Lapua Palma Brass.

My hunting days are slowing down as general plinking along with competitive F Class and free hand full bore take up my time,,, that's not including the predator control along with in the wilds back-packing,,, hiking,,, OHV summer and winter with snow tracks along with endless days of camping.

Yuppers,,, life with 2 units,,, one for match,,, the other for general hunting using the same cartrage.

The trick now is getting both units into semi similar stocks less the barrel Contours and length.

Kind of like a work in progress.

I built this heavy weight extra loooooong unit 3 years ago for F Class, what a dream to shoot.

It was a factory Remmy SPS 308,,, the only thing left stock on it is the action.

It's a Robert Galloway build.
The Bull barrel is built by Bob Jury based on a 308 Bench Rest, 32" length. 10 1/2 twist that drives 178 to 185 Juggernauts like tracks.

4 oz Target Jewel trigger and spiral Pacific Tool and Gage bolt.

Criss with MCRS built the custom stock,,, white birds eye maple with laminated Cheery wood inner supported by a Henery Remple Bypod.

It has served me well,,, so now it's time to shorten it up for some part time hunting and hopefully it will still allow me to tinker with the fun FTR stuff on the side.

My other unit will be half based off of this in the same caliber but with a Wild-Cat composite Var-Tech stock from Stewart.

A bit lighter heavy weight barrel from Bob Jury and another sporter Jewel trigger that I have kicking around. This unit will be for Full Bore,,, a small amount of PRS,,, and the main hunting unit.

I have a few Vortex optics,,, so I'll pick one that I like the most ,,, buy a twin to it with the ranging Tree reticle.

The rest of the optics along with the 30/06 Remmy LR will go to a new home,,, that way things will become simpler.

Planning stages are soon to get underway.

My second rifle is another Remmy 308 SPS in 308 sporter,,, its still in the factory chassy and crappy trigger. I kept running across sales on them up here in Canada. $500 Cnd funds ,,, about $375 Usd.

I have a Var-Tech composite stock sitting around and a spare Jewel trigger with safety. I might as well go this route after reading some threads on the simple things in life.

All of my hunting stuff happens at 35 to 140 yards,,, it might be once in a blue moon that a 200 or 300 meter shot """might""" take place,,, no need for me to shoot past this in the game Harvesting world.

I really enjoy the long range stuff,,, the 2 mile idea was playing havoc on me a few years ago ,,, but my gun Smith who is a long distance shooter him self shut me down on this... Ha.

It's not that it's not fun,,, he said it costs alot to get into ,,, and the ammo costs """could""" get pricey... Machined 338 boolitz are pretty pricey up here in the North.
He asked me a question that I still think about today.

"What's not to like about shooting the 600 and 900 meter F Class stuff ,,, does it not offer enough challange pushing the maximum limits of my skills and rifle package... Goosh,,, I never thought of it that way.

Yes,,, I do enjoy shooting the medium bore,,, I find it challanging to get those frugal boolitz close to the V ring,,, big Grin if I plant a few of them into the 5" circle.

I like my 30/06,,, but I don't have all the supplies like my 308's,,, nor do I have a second unit like the Two 308's.

It would be nice to do this with a different caliber and cartridge,,, but its to late in my middle age to change things up...

The two 308's are Brand new and paided for along with all the supplies, and reloading equipment. Best bang for the buck is using what I have.

The frugal side of life with a less is more idea.

Cool idea and I hope it works well for you! It's interesting how different my outlook on what rifles I want/need has molded and changed over time and experience. None of those ideas looking back were wrong, but they make me chuckle considering how differently I feel now.

I kind of have to look at it as a positive even though I'm giving up on benefits of what my 30/06 can do,,, of course I said this same thing when I went sold off 3 of my Magnum rifles.

Ok,,, 17 of them found new homes 5 years ago in the 5th house cleaning attempt,,, I'll be honest,,, it ain't easy scale-ing back when my adventures took off at a young age. I meet the wrong fellow that owned """alot""" of firearms,,, so I followed suit. It took me 10 years to build a collection that was waaaaay to much,,, 22 rimfires on up to 375's,,, shot-guns that filled one wall and 2 cabinets of hand-guns. Funny thing was that I alway used 3 main hunting rifles and the rest were just part of the mix.

Don't get me right or wrong,,, it was fun having a collection of good times,,, but as time passed by things changed,,, the idea of less is more kicked in about 20 years ago on other hobbies I had on the go,,, the scale back idea Sloooooowly got underway.

Any how,,, the 30/06 was a fun start to jump on,,, just enough energy,,, a bit to much at times,,, and easy to load for,,, of course most cartrages are easy to dial in I find.

My 308 will not be the power house rifle,,, but it won't be the under dog either... What it lacks in my limited hunting category it makes up for in a bit less recoil and a fraction of the fun factor.

I spend alot of time plinking at the range and crown lands up here,,, so I see this little cartrage filling those needs.

Just enough for limited hunting,,, and the same for plinking. Nothing to lose if I don't give it a try,,, plus it allows me to take on more things in the out doors...

That's what really counts in my books

If I could only own 1 rifle it would be a 30/06. If I could only own 2 it would be a 300wsm and a 223. For your hunting and shooting and supplies on hand a 308 makes sense. I went through some bad times several years back and sold a lot of guns. Funny never missed but a handful. I still have way more than I need. Most are kept for sentimental reasons. A few for specialty purposes. Still want a few more. Now days quality trumps quanity,and lots of shooting time with one or two works better for me than having a different rifle for every situation.
Beware the man with only one rifle!

I was really thinking of doing the twin rifle 30/06 thing,,, but I have to much invested in my One 308 target unit,,, probilibly giving up on a 150 to 200 ft-per seconds,,, nothing major if I keep my critter harvests close.

I'm deffinatly looking forward to the 1 cartridge thing for the two rifles.
That way my shooting sports becomes simpler,,, that's one of the reasons,,, the other is practicing with one ballistic load to get it down patt.

Either 178gr ELD-X or M's or 185 Juggernauts,,, learn the drop and wind with them will better my odds at distance... That's part of the goal. Something like """"will""" be the main shooters.

Of course I'll play with other loads in the off season using the sport unit,,, I've been spending some time plinking with the HPBT 168's this winter. They shoot pretty good but the 180gr boolitz seem to group better.

Yuppers,,, lots of time to play with the 140gr'ers on up with everything in-between,,, stuff like that will keep me occupied I'm sure.

The plan is coming into play.

2 rifles that support 1 cartridge,,, life is about to get simpler...

The gun room cleaning will be easy since there is only 1 hunting rifle to sell,,, then thin out """most""" of the optics,,, I'll keep 3 back-units then buy another 2 twin Vortex or Night Force optics as the mains.

At least I'll have 1 unit for hunting and general plinking,,, the other will remain as the F Class rig for one more year.

This is the best bang for the buck going forward. Good thing that all of the major stuff is paided for less the optic change up,,, the sold off stuff will subsidize those costs.

It's -25c shooting weekend up here in the North,,, good thing that there's only 6 more months of this to go. Ha... """NOT"""

I'm dragging out the old 30/06 Long Range this week,,, a quick wipe of the rifling leaving behind some fowling and get at it. Ha

Lots of eye candy to read and look at on the forum as my noodle ponder the ideas of changing cartridges up...

6.5 or something in the 300 category,,, but I'll hold off with what I have since I'm playing the frugal card...

Just enough to get by. LOL...

Clean up the 308,,, then dig out Bertha... Good times fighting the ever changing winds and being able to adjust for boolit drop...

Bring on the 180grain'ers...

Yes,,, the little Honda won't go where the snowmobiles travel,,, but they sure work good up here where the snow pack settles... I do the snowmobile cabins,,, and not the open play grounds. Ha...

All rigged up 1000 + lbs is like watching a rock sink to the bottom of a lake in the fluffy fluff. LOL...

Any Who,,, it was sure fun spending time on the logging and oil patch cut-lines,,, we would cover about 20 to 40 kms per day checking traps,,, the Linx wouldn't step into them,,, so took them with old pipe. 168gr FMJ,,, I should of used the 125's...

We didn't get onto the Wolves on my pals trap line,,, the trapper beside of us had better luck in that department...

Another fellow further North of us got a awesome photo of 38 wolf pack as they single filed out of a large ravine...

The 223 idea crossed my mind,,, but it was to far to go to the city to buy one,,, so I used what I had,,, Old school 308...

Not the best predator critter getter,,, nor the worst,,, at least I wasn't out gunned for the vicious furry red coat pine Martens. LOL.

I love your simpler is better idea but for getting fur you just can't beat a 223 with a v-max. No need to worry about learning trajectory out to 300_yards. Just put it on hair and they die. One little hole in the hide and that's it! Wish I could narrow my rifle choice down to just one caliber but I won't give up my 223 until they they put me under!
