The little lady has done it again!
She has been, surprisingly, very proud of her shooting skills. Last year, on her first ever day in the field she made a beautiful "bang flop" shot at 307yds. She was even nick named by the local game warden a "Colombian Sniper" because of her shot. She was born in Colombia, so it was appropriate.
Well since that first shot she has been a real miser with her ammo. She is 6 for 6 in one shot - one kill dating back to her first day in the woods last year. It has also involved 4 different rifles, all 6.5 but all different chambers!
So we are back in Comanche Texas hunting on the same small lease that we hunted last year. We had some game camera pictures of two buck that I was calling "target bucks" even though one (nice heavy 10pt.) had only walked by the camera twice. The other (wide heavy 9pt) showed up in December and stayed until October 30th.
On that afternoon he and a fairly new buck (8pt) apparently locked it up in a major battle. On the game camera they were there together when the 9pt followed the 8pt out of screen. He had his ears back so I knew they were headed for a fight.
It must have been a good one because the averge 8pt was the new ruler of our feeder. His neck and face wore the cuts of battle and the big 9pt was no longer a daily resident of the feeder.
Opening morning was uneventful. That afternoon a wide 10pt comes though, but he is very young so he got a pass. Sunday morning was pretty slow too. We have been getting rain every few days so it is green in our area.
Sunday evening was slow too until a huge bodied 8pt came to the feeder. I had not checked game camera pics since we arrived so we had never seen him before. After a few bites he walks off!
I told my wife he was a legal buck because we hunt a antler restricted county. He also looked mature, so she ask me of she should have shot. All I told her was "it's up to you, he is legal."
About 30 minutes pass and he comes back. I noticed she went for the safety as soon as I told her he was back. The shot broke shortly after.
It turned out to be a perfect heart shot, but unlike most heart shot deer he only made about three body lengths before hitting the ground!
We gave him a few minutes the went to him. He was a nice 4.5yo buck that sported 8pts. He is a nice buck considering it is only her second big buck.
The shot was only 100yds, but she hit the exact hair she wanted to. The 6.5 Creedmoor I built her served her very well. The 129gr SST moving at 2,900FPS nearly split the heart before lodging against the hide.
Bullet ended up just less than half the original bullet weight. I was surprised to find the bullet without it hitting anything heavier than a few ribs. The wound channel was very good too.
