Steel range setup question

I'm wanting to purchase some steel to setup a range out to 1000 yards. What size plates would you run and at what ranges? 3"-12"inch plates? All one size?
I see alot of guys say they are using 24x24 plates at 1000. Would like to hear some opinions.
