With 300 gr Bergers seated just over 4.00". Currently have them in the lands about .005-.010 but still haven't tried them further out than .010" out. Start at the Retumbo max load? Any input would be appreciated
Yes, I'd start and 338RUM+Retumbo book max from the Hodgdon web site 90.5.
It's less than Alliant book max for a 338RUM.
I checked QL and it concurs with the two above.
Shawn's rule, if I remember correctly was something similar.
FWIW
My 300RUM seated .010 into the lands was great at the starting load. I would love to hear some 'rules' for powder charge when seating into the lands as I'm 5% faster than I'd think but have no clue of the pressure curve.
My Edge is still in the project stage. All parts gathered but when to take it to the gunsmith? Usually takes him a couple days to rebarrel. Everything else has been fitted. I'm shooting it as a 270Wby right now.
A friend of mine shoots this combo, I reccomended he start at 93grns with federal brass and 215Ms, he has settled on 97.5grns which is Alliants max for the Lapua with the 300 smk. He has went as high as 99grns but vertical stringing was horrible. 97.5grns with a .060" jump nets over 2900 fps with 300grn bergers in a 28" barrel, so its pretty stout. It is also extremely dirty when using any other primer than a 215, its dirty with 215s but not bad, similar to Retumbo.
My current load is Rem brass, CCI 250, 91 gr H1000 and the Berger 300 slightly in the lands. OAL, I think, is around 4.030ish so case capacity is up there for an Edge. This load runs about 2800-2810 out of my 27.5" barrel. I'm curious to see if I can get a little velocity and the RL33 was available so I bought 4 lbs to try
Its a good powder, will likely offer 100fps over your H1000 load, of course Retumbo would give you 50. But as I mentioned the CCI250s will make you think you're shooting a muzzle loader with RL33. With higher pressures and the Fed215s this combo has shot in the .1s at 100 yrds and sub 3" at 715yrds, very flat shooting, accurate, and the es and sd seem to be holding pretty good, almost no vertical (less than a 1/2" at 715yrds).
