Slug for Elk

Have a friend that drew an elk permit in New Mexico...The Range should be less than 400 yards...He is useing a 30:06 and I want to recommend a better factory ammo...What weight slug ,what type?...How is Hornady ammo?
He refuses to use reloads...Thanks....Honest Charlie
