It does compress I always had it rolled into the hood and put in the stuff area of my pack. This also acts as a storm shell from wind especially, rain snow and ice. It's not likely to tear if you are busting through brush nor crawling around sneaking up on something. I carried this in place of my Jetstream jacket because it was Water proof
