So I got the brake installed last night and got some brass turned out and loaded for a test run today. Range conditions SUCKED with 15+ MPH winds with gusts but this was happening!!!
The specs are Savage 12 with a Lawton 1-10 twist 29in long including 3 port Muscle Brake, shouldered. Chambered in a 270 WSM set up for the highest BC bullets with .310 neck which gets me .003 clearance after turning the necks.

Loaded up some 150gr Ballistic tips and a couple of 165 Matrix to get an idea on them, the 150's were .010 of the lands and the Matrix just into the lands.

Loaded up 66gr of Retumbo in all but 5 which I stepped from 67 to 71 gr, the 150's ran 3150's and the Matrix at 3056 fps easy. I wanted to find max is why I loaded up the set of five, 67gr = 3187, 68gr = 3212, 69gr = 3266, 70gr = 3295, 71gr = 3351. Got a little bolt lift on 70gr and stiff on 71gr also showed .001 growth at the pressure ring with none below 70gr that so I think I have a good idea where to work at. Ran a few through the Redding bushing die and loaded and run out is under .001.

I'm feeling good about how everything turned out for my first chambering job and spec out reamer with worked over brass. I'll get better pics of the rifle in the day light but got some group pics. I think it shows some promise, specially with no load tuning at all and shooting of the bipod in a howling wind!.gun)

First break in group, top two are the first two, I think I have two groups because the target was swinging bad so I had to try to time them. Didn't try to zero and cleaned between shots.

Made a couple scope adjustments and could see the shots which tend to make me shoot bad, when I get them out to 300yrd + then I'll settle down so we'll see.

Very Good Shooting!

An average of 0.302 MOA for 6 shots at 300 yards would make me happy.

Congrats B&G, I am envious. That is awesome you are doing your own rifles .

Hope you can make it this weekend.

Those were shot at 100yards, I need to take it out to 300 so I can see what is actually going on. I shoot very poorly at 100 yrds if I can see the shots, the first group was hitting way off of my point of aim so I couldn't see it when focusing on the target, then I dialed it in closer and shot the others which is fairly typical for me to shoot around 3/4 to 1 MOA no matter how good the gun is. It shows some definite promise, I didn't really shoot for accuracy more just wanted to test safety and function and see what velocities I should be working in, it was kinda nerve racking and exciting lighting up my first complete build!:D

Broz, working on getting there!! I'm stoked about getting this put together, it actually looks like the worst it will shoot is right where my factory barrel would with a lot of load development, so at least I'm not any worse a builder than the factory at this point :D

The next huge thrill is going to be when you take an animal with a gun you built. The adrenilin level with the first one taken with a rifle you built jumps up to archery type levels. Good Luck

Lookin' good.

Pretty sweet when you have you invested in it!!!

Try to relax a little though. I find it nearly impossible, personally:rolleyes:

I'm eagerly awaiting your drop chart development!

The 160 class bullet seems a pretty well balanced loading for the WSM. W/a decent bc and a little over 3200 it shot reach out there. However, I'm bettin' there's more velocity in another powder. Don't wear the barrel out finding it though. :D

eddybo, I'm looking forward to lining up on some game with this, I'll never forget my first bow kill, I got the shakes so bad after I saw the buck tip over I had to sit down.

Roy, I loaded up some more this evening so I'll be waiting for a decent window of weather opportunity to take it out farther. I'm quite content running 3000fps + I'm guessing the 165's will shoot nice at the 3050-3150fps range which should make for some good ballistics. Took a pic for ya Roy, a little teaser.

Gun pic, barrel in the white till I make sure this is worth Nitriding.

Bigngreen,

Congratulations! That's a great milestone.

I have to believe you've made an excellent start since you haven't even broken in the barrel or worked up a load yet.

I'm still gathering tooling and making jigs. But, I'm pretty stoked myself and share your excitement.

Looks like you have a good thing going. How are your 338 projects coming along.

Good Job, Jason

I felt up a Brux 338 1-10 twist Med Palma barrel this afternoon that will be a 338 RUM for my buddy, he also has the Savage action and I have one four port Muscle Brake left and the reamer so this will be the next one to get built. He had his hands on the Brux in about 4 weeks and he score the action on Gunbroker now the 14-16 week wait for a P-dog stock from Stockade, I may have to inlet it into a 2x4 so we can shoot it before that :D

I'm out there for a week in the middle of May gun)

Sweet we should be around and slowed down by then. Also if you remember our triathlon is the 21st of may if you are interested I can get you on my team. I too am waiting on parts the barrel for my gun should be here may 1st so I will have it up and smokin by the time you come through. But if not we have my sons rig done and dialed in, so I have a back up.
