short vs long

There are threads about short barrel .300 RUMs. I am curious at what length should one use a lesser cartridge to get the same velocity with considerably less powder and blast? Maybe a .300 Win Mag instead. Or perhaps a short mag.

A cartridge with higher capacity will be faster than a cartridge of lower capacity at any equal barrel length with the same bullet.

I've been around and done just about all of them down to 20-22" barrels in short mags, long mags, medium mags, improved mags, mags that were supposed to be the next coming of Christ and everything in between working on such quest for many years, many a barrel have went to the scrap yard because of this infatuation of finding the perfect 30 cal to run in a 20-22" barrel..

While its been fun and very educational, what i found was, no matter what case or design used, higher volume wins!!

Case in point.. case on right will not do what the case on left will do in any barrel length, bullet weight etc. etc.
