short barreled 6.5x 284

anyone ever had one and by short i mean like 16-18 inches its going to be a bush gun so velosity not everything just wondedering how it went

The 6.5 284 needs more barrel to reach its potential because of case size and powder used.

If you want a brush/short rifle with a 16 to 18" barrel I would recomend one of the shorter
cases and a short action.

The 308 size cases (243,260,7/08 and 308 do well with 18 to 20'' barrels.

The smaller 6.5x 47 sized cases will perform with 16 to 18'' barrels because with less case capacity
faster burning powder must be used to reach pressures and velocities. So a shorter barrel can
be used without to much unburnt powder.

The only way I know to use the larger cases in short barrels is to use heavy bullets (Like the
special purpose pistols do). The heaver bullet slowes velocity and allows more slow burning
powder to be used.

Thanx for that. i have a 6.5x284 with a 26inch barrel already and was thinking of haveing a little brother for it and not new dies and brass and stuff. might have to go 260 or 6.5x47l as i like 6.5mm what powder do you think will suit the smaller cases in a short barrel as i only use 2209 6.5x284 and 2206h 223 whould any of these suit??

Jump over to the specialty pistol, handgun, thread and ask this question. There are some on their that shoot pistols in this caliber with 16ish inch barrels.

Savage just started building a mod 116 SS Syn stock gun with a 22" sporter barrel for people that are wanting a light carry gun. Looks pretty decent to me for someone that wants something like this. I have even seen them in the left hand model.

I am having a similar rifle built in 6.5X55 for similar purpose. Hopefully will have it by Fall....

had a chat to they guys over in the pistol section and they are getting 2700-2780fps out of 17inch barrels with pretty much the same load and powder i use to get 2950fps out of my 26inch 6.5x284 useing 140 projectiles. so id be happy as shooting out to 300 with a 140grainer doing 2700. looks like this progect is a goer. also to billr the idea is to have a 16inch barrel with suppressor and it will end up about 20inches and savage dont do a 6.5 in the 116.

lightbulb7-08 close to perfect I reckon

:) :) Ahhhhh but they do. Its what I do for a living. I bought one from the factory rep on Monday. It was left handed with a sporter barrel, S.S. Syn. in left hand. Would be very easy to shorten and put on your suppressor and fairly light.
From what I understand, this one is a non-catalog item as yet but one that is going into production soon. Besides, if you call Savage they will put it together for you and ship it to your dealer. Check on Savage shooter forum as they can tell you the number and who to contact. Savage is kind of like the Winchester of old. You tell them what you want and they will build it if it can be built from parts that are on hand.

They will make one and send it to your exporter who in turn will do all the paperwork and ship it to your local dealer. To find an exporter just do a bit of searching on the web. There are a number of them out there. Not a cheap deal but the number of guns being shipped has nothing to do with the cost. Last I knew it was the same between 1 and 10 as far as cost of exporting. If I can get some time I can dig up the name of the contact at Savage and also an exporter. All pretty easy to find though.
