I have a short action that i want to build on i just don't know what would be the best round. i would like to shoot a 225-250gr bullet hopefuly around 2850fps this rifle would be for hunting out to 700 on mostly deer size animals may be a elk some day. so witch round would work the best???
300 wsm, 338wsm, 338rcm, 338 fed, 338 ruger, 325 ruger any others i missed help me out here.

The 325 WSM is a .323 (8 mm) and the largest bullet for 8mm is around 200gr
in loaded factory ammo.

If you have a 338 WSM made you have a better selection of bullets.

In a short action you are somewhat limited to case capicity and the WSM's
are about optimum.

The 325 WSM has very good balistics and is worth looking at .

PS; I looked and Woodledge,Sierra and swift make 220gr bullets in .323 (8mm).

how about a 375 caliber? 375WSM....barnes makes a 235 gr TSX. that would be a hammer!

actually my pick would be a 338wsm. a 185 or 210TSX would be a short bullet and in a short action, you're gonna need all the help you can get.

you would have to pull the bolt on a magnum length round.... may not even be that easy to load with an edge length round and the bolt in.

will it eject a round are do you have to pull the bolt??????????

My short action savage ejects an empty 338 Edge very well and so will a SA Remington. However, I just verified that I can't put a loaded 338 Edge round into the SA Remington, as the port is a little shorter than on the Savage.

Edited: The Remington I tried to put the Edge round is a 243. The round was close to clearing the port, maybe a larger chamber would give it the extra few thou to load. Hopefully someone has a larger short action chambering that they could test.

I would suggest taking a look at the 7mm WSM. With the 180 grain bullets you are good to 1k on deer and elk.
