Hey guys im new to the site but have been looking over yall opinions for a while. I live in louisiana and hunt pipelines where long shots are very possible. I also hunt Nebraska where every shot is 200-500 yds. I have a .300 RUM. Was wonderingwhich scope would be the best all around scope for the gun and situations i hunt. I have been looking hard at the NF but was wondering if i dont need the turrets and jus get a scope and set it 3" high and let it fly??

That is what we did 30 yrs. ago, and hit rate was low at distance. Look at Huskemaw,Greybull, and G7 WEB SITES. To get a idea what is out there NF also, there is a good scope article on this site, modern reticules. I would guess the majority here, that take game at the longer ranges dial up. With either a BDC dial or a MOA or Mil.The reticule is used also for hold over. I do all of the above.

Thanks 6x6. i you had a choice btw those scopes which would you chose sounds like you have alot of experience in long shots. The only thing that i would really like in a scope is regular crosshairs. BDC scopes and scope thats are full of lines seem too busy!

Same here! I have 99% mainly Duplex reticules....( fat at the ends and then small fine cross hair in the middle) but have a Varmint reticule on a Zeiss.. The cross bars on it are far enough apart to actually see something.

Don't over look a Vortex PST FFP scope. The guys that don't like hash marks hinder them selves by not having anything to hold off for the wind. Yes you can adjust your clicks for wind, but it is slow and not necessary with the hash marks. Also if you get a long shot at a big buck and it is snowing or your range finders battery goes dead you can still have a chance by ranging with your hash marks.

You can get a very accurate Custom Turret on lots of scopes. Also I beleave in getting high power scopes similar to mine. If you only have about 15 power and need more OH WELL.

Mine is a 6-24x50mm Vortex PST FFP MOA with a Vortex Custom Turret:

Here is a 1,000 yd. target I shot with my 6mm Norma BR. hunting rifle. The 5 shot scores and group sizes are in the lower right of target. I shot using 24 power. All 15 shots would have been in the boiler room of an antelope. :)

Im truly baffeled on which direction to go. Im not by any means an avid shooter strictly a hunter. Grant it im a pretty good shot the scope that would best suit me is a "hunters" scope easy to use.?? I mean adjusting for the wind i dont think i would know what to do! Lol

Nice target partner...and with a 6BR also. Ive got a 6BR coming along ( one of these days...waiting to get the barrell swapped out)

How much drop you get at 1000? It dont mean much to me because the furthest I can shoot ( and thats only on some days) is 600....but it would be nice to know

My zero with 105 gr. Berger VLDs is 200 yds. I turn 108 1/4 moa clicks which is 27 moa and that puts me in the blue.

PS: I have a 26" 1 in 8" twist Brux barrel.

It is a lot easier with a scope like mine then like the one you have. Especially with a custom turret. It will make you a much better shot.

Just imagine you are over looking your power line and you are sighted in at 100 yds. for a close up shot. Then the biggest buck you ever saw steps out at 800 yds. You laze the distance turn your custom turret to #8 for 800 yds. and if no wind hold the cross hair on its shoulder and squeeze and watch him drop. It will be that easy. gun)------------

PS: Put targets out on the power line when it is windy and shoot while holding into the wind with the hash marks. With a FFP scope the hash marks are the same distances between each at ALL the power settings. A little practice and you will understand. The Vortex scope I have sells for around $950 plus $100 for the custom turret. Read the Threads I posted and if you do what I did you should be spot on with the custom turret.

108..? Geeze...Id lose count for sure...lol
Ive got those slugs and Lapuas both to try out
26" 1 in 8 Brux is what I'll end up with. Somehow my order got snafu'd and i ended up with a 22" barrel..?? So my smith is waiting for a 26" Varmint taper to come in and is switching them for me.

IM running ( or will be) a Zeiss 6.5-20 Conquest on mine
stock Rem trigger lightened up...but will most probably switch to a Jewell like is in my stiller ( nice triggers!!)

Thanks again

I wont own a scope that doesnt have dials. thats how inportant they are. Just pony up and get one, then learn to use it. you wont regret it. Even plain jane factory rifles can be extremly effective inside 600 yard, the odd rifle well beyond... when you dial. I like the MOA reticules alot, but also have mill-rad and duplex. I go duplex on anything less than 10 power on the top end.

Stick around on here awhile you will learn.:D

I just had a custom rifle build for me. The builder recommended the Bushnell Elite Tacticle 6-24X50. I like the scope but I do not love the scope. It works fine but I regret not getting a Night Force. The glass is not as good and the construction is not as substantial. I am sure it will not last like the Nightforce. I saw the post that said buy once, cry once and never regret it. In my case I bought once and will probably buy again. I cry everytime I think for a few bucks more I could have had the best. Why build custom and settle for a scope that is not as worthy as the rifle.
