Hello all. Looking into a savage rifle in 280AI. I don't own and don't know much about them, but have heard they are good out of the box production shooters. Any recommendations of a model that has treated you well. I have 2 tikkas, 2 Winchester model 70s and wanted to try something new that had good out of the box results. Thx in advance, Pete

A good friend of mine just bought the 110 in 280 ai it shoots 168 Berger's under an inch along with 143 hammer hunters just under 3/4 inch. It did not the factory hornday eldx. The rifle has less than 100 rounds down and it has a 22in barrel but so far she really likes it.

I've had a few savages. No complaints with any of them. I would recommend savage as far as factory rifles are concerned. The only bit of advice I can give is that factory rifles of any sort that has the ultra thin light weight barrels are more likely to be more finicky than a heavy or even standard Sporter weight barrel.

That high country has a heavier barrel, it's a pretty sweet rifle. I have no personal experience other than running the bolt at an outdoor show but in did like it over the carbon barrel 110. I have a Fcp-sr 6.5 creed with the accustock and it shoots 3 different factory loads at 0.5" or better. It has a 24" that measures 0.75" at the muzzle. It's a tad heavy for me pack around the mountains but when I'm in the blind it's beside me. Best wishes and I don't think you would be disappointed with a savage.

Ps my buddy has a stealth and he shot this with me a few weeks back at 325 handloaded berger. That's a 3" circle

Pete,

I have 4 Savage rifles (2 of which are now semi-customs) and they are all shooters to 1K yards, except for the .264 WM (pending load development). The Savage rifles are hard to beat for their out of the box accuracy and their DIY friendliness.

Cut my teeth on Rugers, went throught the savage build thing and still have over a dozen but my goto hunting rifles these days are CZ 527 in 6.5Grendel and 2 Tikka 30-06 &6.5Sweede.
Nuthing really wrong with a Savage but I much prefer the smooth handleing of the Tikka action! Most of my Prairie dog guns are Savages but big game get hunted with a Tikka or the CZ

Have two Savages, 110 fcp HS in 300 WM and the Model 12 LRP In 260. Both rifles are very accurate for being out of the box, mass produced pieces. With regard to your question around 280ai, not sure they make a heavy barrel option in that. Friend does have the 110 long range hunter that has performed pretty well for him and has been accepting of multiple bullet/powder combos.

Let me know how the 264 wm turns out. I'm chomping at the bit to build a 264 win mag.

I've bought several new Savage rifles and never had a problem with any of them,I had a 110 7mm Rem.mag that shot 5 shot 100yd. groups under 1 in. consistently, but I usually change the synthetic stock to something more stable, savage synthetic stocks are a little to flimsy for me.
