so I have a 1993 savage 112 varmint ss bull barrel rifle in 22-250--it is a long action, blind mag--I think its a stager feed (iirc its a 112fvss)

Im getting close to shooting out the barrel and was thinking of a rebarrel--
1st off, can I put the magnum olt face on my bolt so I can go to a wsm cartridge?
2nd, does anyone know if the 1993 savage was small or large shank-- (Im going to measure to make sure but havent got around to it yet
3rd-- what pre-fit manu would you recommend, there are sooo many available now

nobody?
I see pt&g sells both "standard" and "custom bolt heads for savage

I heard that when changing from a std bolt face to a magnum you may need a new cross pin and firing pin ?

will i need to do anything to the feed lips or internal mag box to go from a 22-250 to a wsm? probably

any links where i can research this info without having to read a thousand posts of 1/2 wrong info? I was pretty sure there would be people here that have changed the bolt head and installed a savage pre-fit barrel that would know the nuances and problems that I may run into

thanks for your time and info

I am pretty sure what you have but pictures would be helpful savage did make a short action on a long action. pictures of action out of the stock showing action with bolt closed and of internal box also the barrel nut. measurement between action screws will also be helpful

ill take some pis and measurements when i get home-- back when i bought it there were no short action rifles iirc, everything was built on a long action

here is a page with some info on it https://gunvalues.gundigest.com/savage-arms-corporation/11564/model-112fvss/

here is a pic of a similar rifle

1. Yes
2. Small or Standard
3. I'm currently using X-Caliber stainless and they've a sale right now.

Stagger feed mag. If you're going WSM & blind box, the box will need some tweaking. Savage 10's are actually mid-length action, so you're good on length.
Consider a bolt lift kit & a longer bolt handle, low cost easy upgrades.
If it were me, I always change out the Savage stock to chassis or a synthetic tactical type.
New trigger wouldn't be a bad idea, if you haven't changed it out, Rifle Basix makes a few good options?

thanks for thw info, its not a savage 10, its a 112fvss, so it should be long action since its a 112, right? I do know there is a TON of room in front of the 22-250 ammo when loaded in the bland box mag so its definitely longer than a short action

what does the "bolt lift kit" do for the rifle?

My bad, I always have Model 10 on the brain! Long action = more options?! Before the 10's, yeah the 110 work-around short cartridge bolt stop extension.
I'v lots of models of Savage's.

Its almost certainly a short action but
If it's a short action the action screw spacing will be 4.41 or 4.27. On the 4.27 I think that's right number but shorter than 4.41. If it's a long action the spacing will be 5.062

Small shank I am almost certain. The first large shank rifles came out in 2003 so if your rifle is 1993 you should be fine. Look at the pic below to be certain.
I use apache gunworks. He takes 14 eternities to build your barrel but man they shoot. I have also used northland shooters supply criterion barrels, X caliber barrels and McGowen barrels. All with good results. If you order from northland shooters supply you'll have to call and talk to the owner to order and he can answer any question. I once called and his wife answered and said he was on FaceTime with a customer to help him put his barrel on. So they would be my suggestion to you.

More considerations: Is the receiver machined full length and the box mag plugged or is the receiver machined short and the box mag unplugged? Some were made this way.

These days I just start with a new 12FV from CabPro Shops, with the top bolt release and Accu Trigger.

I found this on a different page: "There was plenty of 112 FVSS's made, most being before the introduction of the new short action in '97. These older models used a blued action with a stainless barrel up until about 2000"

mine was definitely from 1993 and it has the blued action and non-fluted stainless barrel--I will measure the action screw spacing later and post what I find --ill check the bbl nut too and double check to see if its the stagger feed

I have a 110 with a shilen in 7 mag that shoots fantastic and a 110 in 6.5x55 with a hart barrel that is also excellent ! I want to try a shaw next because the are extra affordable. And i have seen good reviews
