Savage 10 XP 223 Conversion

I want to build a short action Deer rifle and was wondering if my Savage 10 XP 223 would be a good starting point. I'm thinking 243 Win or AI, is this possible with the 223 action ? Is it cost effective or should I look at another donor action ? I want this to be a light weight rifle, low recoil caliber, etc...
