So I've been build a lot more light weight builds for backpacking in the last few years the problem was they all had round 90 port brakes out of titanium.
Now I have a few painkillers on my other larger rifles and fell in love with those but were heavy. Well salmon river delivered. He shipped me two titanium slab brakes. One in 30 cal and one in .338 both smaller sized ones.
First this guys machining skills are some of the best I've seen. I've never had a brake with better fit and finish. But that's secondary to how it performs.
So first off I threaded one on with a crush washer to save time for testing into my 300 win mag. Rifle is in the 9lbs range with a 26" tube pushing hammer 181's at 3180fps.
Was able to shoot my painkiller brake then this one. Both these brakes are amazing with the edge going to salmon river. I felt the recoil pulse was a bit slower with his. And the muzzle rise was almost non existent. After shooting about 30 rounds while testing for comparison a 243 axis with 70gr hammers the recoil was very similar with the pulse being longer on the win mag but sharper and faster on the 243. So that give you a reference.
Next up was the .338 Lapua improved. It's a simple savage 110 ba cut to a improved chamber for fireforming round and some fun.
So I headed out back with my father who is close to 70 and year ago had to give up his 300 win mag that's magna ported that accompanied him for almost 50 years all around North America for almost everything you could hunt. So I brought the 300 and had him start with that. He got ready like always and after he shot it he turned and said "got another?" I handed him another and bang. He said I could shoot this all day.
Then I broke out the Lapua improved and sent a few down the tube thinking wow this little brake makes this very easy to shoot. Significantly better than the stock one which wasn't bad to begin with. Then my dad said let me try. He shot it and said wow I expected that to hurt. He did comment on the sound which was made worse by the way were were positioned to the steel barns.
So I was able to shoot the Lapua prone a few times with no noticeable debris or blast to shooter. Also took a position just off to the side and behind my father as he shot and still was not in the blast path. Which is kinda what I expected after shooting at the range and not having my 3/4 empty monster can go flying off my bench.
So overall if you looking to reduce the recoil on your lightweight builds you have found it with this brake.
I will be bring more guys out to the range this week hopefully and getting more feedback from other shooters.
