I have a chance to pick up a barrel from a TRG 42 in .338 Lapua. It is the older 1-12" twist but I'm OK with that. My question is, are the Sako threads compatible with any other actions besides the Sako? I recently had a Tikka 595 re-barreled and the smith said the barrel threads on the Tikka were the same as the Winchester 70. I am hoping to have a .338 Lapua built without spending a bunch. Thanks for any help.

Most Sako threads are Metric and will not match standard threads.

The only way to find out for sure is to unscrew the barrel.

Also some smiths don't cut metric threads.

I am pretty sure it is metric, but for the little it cost to get a good barrel properly fitted compared to trying to make another one work "ok" shouldn't even be a concern. For what it costs to touch off each round of 338 Lapua I would get a high end barrel and make sure it is as accurate as possible. I would recommend a Brux or any other high end barrel. I myself kind of like cutting metric threads as it gives me something a little different to do.

Hi mate,

I'm having a Winchester 70 rebarrelled with a Sako barrel. The following are some of the Sako thread dimensions which match or are close to the Winchester 70, 1 inch x 16 TPI thread dimensions.
L579 & early L61 = .870" L x 1.0" Dia x 16 V-TPI

L61R or an AV it is a 1.045 X16 TPI.The small and medium actions use 1.00 X 16 TPI on the medium and I am not familiar with the small L461 action.

Some say Sako 75 are metric, not sure about that one. I have found some threads where they say Sako 75's they have done are metric 1.5mm pitch & I think 26mm diameter, they weren't sure of that diameter though. Others say all the Sako 75 actions they have re-barrelled have been 0.996"-0.997" x 16TPI. Someone with more knowledge on this subject may be able to shed some light.

Tikka 1" x 16 TPI

Sako TRG 21 is M27 x 1.5mm

Cheers

Jorge
