I've been trying Rl-26 and 185gr classic hunter with my sako 300 rum. My twist won't let me use the 230's which I like to and H1000 and Retumbo have not given me tight groups. With 88.2grs of 26 I'm getting 1/2" MOA @100 but velocity seems low at 2989. With really no data I don't know how those numbers add up. I'm not showing any signs of pressure but based on other data I'm close to max or above. Any feedback would be great.

I don't run this combo in my 300 RUM. But to me it seems slow. I think 3150 would be a reasonable number.

Alliant doesn't have load data for RL26 and the RUM, but they do for the 300 Weatherby Mag, and with that they are running 84 gr. of RL26 with a 180 Gr. bullet and getting 3150. So would seem that yours should run a little faster.

You can email Berger at [email protected]
and they will provide you load data for your combo. They are usually pretty fast at responding too. Then you will have a good base to judge from.

If you trust your chronograph then I agree...2989 is a little slow for that combo.

From what I've read people are seeing better velocity with RL 26 compared to H1000 in most cartridges.

What kind of velocity were you getting from the H1000/185 combo? What kind of chrono are you running?

I've helped a friend with reloading for his 300 RUM and he got 3065 from the 215 Berger Hybrid and H1000. Using my rule of thumb of ~100fps/10gr of bullet weight I would say you should see 3150-3200 plus out of your gun.

If you try a couple more of the H1000 combo over your chrono and they are also abnormally slow then you may have a slow barrel.

Other than that keep working up slow and make sure to stay safe.

I'll check my data for the H1000 but I believe it was above 3150, that's why I was confused with the rl-26. Maybe it was just a bad trip, I'll see if I can use my buddies chrono and compare numbers.

I used to run 97.5 h1000 at 3407 fps with very tight groups. This was a tad on the hot side though.

No pressure signs at all. I'm going to keep what I have at 88.2grs, the bullets pretty much touch each other.

So you loaded 88.2 of RL 26 using Berger 185 VLD and are getting 3150 from a 26innch barrel and they are touching? Sight in at 100 or 200 yes?

Thanks. I'm waiting for the 105 heat index days to quit here so I can go try my loads.

I'm using there classic hunters, out of a 26" barrel 1:11 twist and I'm getting 2989 with RL 26, under 1/2 MOA at 200.

Good to k ow. I'm working on developing a load for my new 300RUM. I have some 190 nosler LR and Berger 185 VLD loaded using RL22, RL 25, And RL 26 with different charges but again, can't get the weather to cool down some and the wind to stop blowing. Hard to chrono in 15-20 mph winds. I hope to get a load shooting under 1/2 inch at 200yds going 3150 to sync with my NFL Velociry 1000 HVM5 NSX scope. That way, hunting out to 1000 yes should be dead on.

I'll keep the thread posted when I get out to do so with results.

Thanks.
