Hey rifleman! I have a 70s vintage custom shop 30-06 collecting dust in the safe. I'm considering rebarrelling to a .338 caliber for elk&bigger game. I already have a.300mag. Should I go to .338-06,.338Win.mag. .340Weath.mag or maybe a.375H&H? Whats on your mind? Dskiper

If .375 is on the table, I'd turn it into a .375 Ruger. It'll exceed the .375H&H in the same length and magazine capacity as the 30-06.

I think the 375 Ruger is a magnum boltface.

My vote would be for an Edge. 375 Ruger would be close to the top too.

Yep, you are right. It's the same length but does have the .532 boltface.

I've heard guys building the .338/375 Ruger but haven't heard how it works. It is definitely bigger than the 338Win mag (about half way between the Winmag and the 338 RUM).

Your cheapest alternative would be to do it on the 473 boltface you have, such as the 338-06, 35 Whelen, or the 9.3, all on the 06 case.

I did a 338-06 Improved for that very reason.

But I already had built a 375 Ruger on a 700, so that arena was covered.
