Reloads causing soot on brass/bolt

Hopefully someone can help me here. I'm reloading 270 Winchester reduced recoil loads with h4895. Ive noticed some loads are tight when closing the bolt, some are not. Last range session I had 2 not fire but had light firing pin marks. Today's session all loads fired but I noticed soot on the case all the way to the head and the bolt was sooty. Is this normal for h4895. Btw it's a tikka t3. Any advice is greatly appreciated. These loads all shoot sub moa 100

Sounds like to me your loads are so mild there not sealing the neck of the brass in your chamber and letting gases by.

I had the same happen with my reduced loads.

Regretfully, you have the choice to put up with the smoke or crimping the load with a medium to heavy crimp.

Thanks so much. I've loaded a lot of rounds and this caught me off guard. So a crimp should solve it or step up the charge weight. Sounds good

Annealing the brass will help

How much clearance do you have? A thicker brass may help.

It might also help to shoot the brass at a full load then only neck size With the mild reloads. This might help the shoulder stay nice and tight to the chamber.

Measure a case that has a full load charge that has been fired and a sized case with a seated bullet the difference will pretty much tell you.

I dont know how a crimp will help other than create more pressure, which a stiffer charge will do that.

That nickel plated brass is hard, I would only use regular brass cases so you can aneal if needed.
I tried nickel brass once for low pressure cast bullet loads had about the same problem.

Your cases might be to long I would check that

Too light/under charged load. Bump up powder to minimum per load data.

Are you trying to get subsonic loads? Or just really light recoiling?

Same problem will occur in shotgun reloads that are low recoil...wad can't get out the barrel before the pressure pushes back past the opened hull.....
Gets stuff really dirty...really fast....no fun cleaning up that mess....
I would go for a lighter recoil by way of lighter bullet or brake...and i don't like brakes.....
Unless it is a 'union break'...and I work for myself....dont see them very often.....
