Rebarreling a 721

Ive got an old 721 in 300 H&H that I want to add a different countour barrel to. I was wondering what you guys thought would be best for a mountain gun for longer distance? I dont know if anyone has tried a 300 H&H on a longer barrel, say 30 inches or if it would even give an advantage. I love the caliber and want to keep this gun in this caliber, but I want a tactical stock and new barrel. Let me know what you guys think.

I assume that your reloading for the H&H to get any kind of respectible velocity out of it. their would be some velocity gain with the longer barrel but in my oppinion it woulden't be worth the added weight and trouble of carrying.

I personaly would not rebarrel the gun inthat caliber , feel that their are better performing rounds out their that are less trouble to reload for and have a larger selection of factory ammo available also , the 300 Win mag comes to mind first and formost. But its your gun and if that is the caliber that you want to shoot then it sounds like a good idea for you.

if this is gonna be a "mountain" style rifle and the weight is gonna be an issue I would rebarrel it with a 26" maybe a 28" barrel in one of the 5R rifled barrels from either Rock Creek , Obermeyer , Broughton or Bartlin , the 5R rifleing will give you a little more velocity without any added powder. And for the conture I'd go wiht say a medium Palma conture or light varmint conture , I personaly like fluted barrels so mine would be fluted , get a good stock in the desgine you want and you should be set.

Rebarreling a 721 is the same as rebarreling a 700.

Regarding cartridge if I were super serious about LRH I'd go w/a different cartridge as suggested by James Jones.

If mountain rifle implies something light to lug up and down mountains I'd go with a very light contour maybe #3 in a 26" length.

I know that a 27" #4 Lilja in a Mauser w/Fajen Thumbhole stock is on the heavy side.

I'd also do the composite stock thing to save weight.

If you love the caliber, don't let anyone talk you into anything else.

That long case feeds slick as owl poop, and is flawless - if it has enough power for you, then stay with it.

As to barrel length, you probably have a 24", and if that seems short for you, then get a longer one... it is easy to get a 26", 28" or 30" now, and then have it shortened later.

It mostly depends on your style of shooting. If you take long shots, then the longer barrel is an advantage... but if the shoots are short range( up to 500yds) then 24" or 26"should be fine.
