I don't post many threads, mostly living in the classified sections. I'm getting ready to build a rifle I've long wanted to build, so I thought I'd share the process. I'd also like to open the topic for discussion if anyone wants to weigh in on they're experiences, things they would do or do different, etc.
Several years back I purchased the pictured rifle at auction from a California estate. It is a 1957 Winchester model 70 in a custom Claro stock with a re-purposed 20" Apex barrel, chambered in 308 Norma Mag. On the bottom of the barrel is punched "J. BOLLIN 1 / 61", which I took to be the 'smith and the year it was rebarrelled and restocked. The bluing is nice, but it doesn't shoot well after a few tries with custom loads. The LOP is too short for me and it kicks like a SOB. All this considered, I don't feel bad using the action and hardware to build it to my liking.
So here's the plan... I've sourced a CM krieger #3 7mm 9tw barrel to finish at 26", and I'll be using a factory stock with the barrel channel opened up for a #4 contour. There will be a little gap and i think i will fill it with a little brown bedding compound, while maintaining a floated barrel.
I've built about a dozen custom guns (I don't count ARs in this) with my Gunsmith, mostly bolt guns. I'm not worried about the build or really asking for advice, just thought I'd start this thread and share this build as it unfolds. That said, if you have built pre-64s and have suggestions or lessons you've learned through the process, I'm all ears. Oh, I'll be chambing it in 7-300wsm and running heavies, not sure which, yet.
Also, if anybody is familiar with J. BOLLIN, please share what you know.
More to come,
TK
