R8 Collets

FWIW, I've bought used Hardinge collets for a song from eBay. Some of them even looked rough, but every one was accurate. Of course mill collet accuracy isn't as critical as lathe. I'm not sure a full set even has 25 in it, all Imperial. How many tooling shank sizes do you really have?

I will almost never use a collet when I have a tool holder available. There are situations where a collet is 'the way to go' because of clearance issues or what have you, but a tool holder is the way to go on a vertical mill. I have a set of collets, graduated in the standard sizes (1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4) on cutter shanks , but they are my second choice. A good ball bearing drill chuck mounted on a holder with the proper spindle taper for drilling and reaming 1/2" and smaller shanks. Reduced shank drills use a tool holder (1/2" or 3/4").
