I know this is stupid question, lack of knowledge not idiocy, but don't want to invest in LR shooting anymore then I have if I'm gonna fail before I start.
I have quite few sub moa and few 1/4moa group loads for 300rum and 7 rem mag at 250yds with hunting bullets not LR ELR target bulllets. 25+yrs hand loading and yes I count my flyers, 3 shot and 5 shot groups. If 3clover leaf no need shoot 5 my opinion at 250yds
I've never had opportunity to shoot at 500-1000 but believe I have the equipment, 20 moa bases, good optics, shooting skill, what I believe handloads that are good enough? If i can get 1/4moa from Speer grand slams for example , I'm certain I can produce that or better with Berger or other LR projectiles etc. Never bought expensive target bullets, just not what I was jnto.
I've never traveled to ELRranges, or LR Classes.
Kentucky it's practically non existent that I've found, cept kne farm I got permission1700yds, 1400 safely and day before I was gonna shoot had 15 landowners people wanted to do it to so I bailed. Figured it would be insanely distracting and unorganized. Didn't figure there was time for all that no one else was gonna bring targets, wanted to shoot my steel. Rowdy bunch, I'm rowdy too just not when I'm trying to accomplish something.
Just asking for feedback on baseline "good enough" I believe I'm well above baseline by my extensive but limited research YouTube, forums etc. i know of spin drift, correalis affect depending on shooting direction, reading wind, drop tables etc. I have done my research, estimated research. Main reason I joined this forum!

I am by no means an expert on LR shooting. I took a class offered by Badlands Tactical in SWOK. The class was excellent! As far as equipment the 7mm rem mag will be fine. Part of success is maintaining good mechanics. Lower recoiling rifles make it easier to maintain good mechanics. With a break or suppressor on a 7mm you will probably be fine. A good spotter is very helpful. With an average scope you will not be able to see your hits, so that is why the spotter is needed. Plus without a spotter, you can waste a lot of ammo guessing. If you are just learning to have fun and become a better shooter, which is why I did it, I would not spend a lot of money on additional equipment. If you are serious about competing, then I will let others weigh in as I have never competed in s LR course. I shot the class with a 308 using Federal Gold Medal Match ammo 168 grain. The scope was 3x15 and over 15 years old. Nothing new or fancy. It was first focal though. I am just a hunter, but I had no problem hitting targets out to 1,000 yds. I would like to go back and learn how to read the wind better. Long-range shooting is addictive and it is a lot of fun. Best of luck!

I don't have brakes on either of my magnums. Grew up shooting groups reloading 7mag so recoil is not a problem. 16yrs old I bought that savage 110 7mag. Couldn't hit a thing, but older brother got me into reloading and shooting groups. Taught me how shoot sub moa 100%

The reason to shoot 5 shot groups is as much a mental test as it is an equipment test...I like to go out on both good and bad days to evaluate loads and a working against conditions will give one the mental workout as well as an overall skills test.

I have used life sized targets at range, versus scoring targets and have spent the entire day in as close to as real hunting conditions as I could and then fired 20 rounds or less and collected the target, then compared it to my observations and where I thought I had hit, boy can your ego take a hit.

Good at 250...move out to 500 then to 700 then 1000. Clean bore shot versus foul bore shot, means complete clean of the rifle between shots.only way to find out if both go to same point of aim consistently at long range.

Competition versus hunting what does my rifle do when it gets hot, where will it put rounds when wearing a brake versus a suppressor.

Practice each shot as if it is the only shot, slow and smooth is fast, spend more time reading the conditions than shooting and write down or record your observations.

Yes 100% on all you said. I practice most if not all that. Adding in the extreme heat and cold too. I shoot 22lr at 250yds a lot with crosswind too. That's mental challenge and most times I do shoot 5shot because after perfect 3shot clover leaf group presents the huge mental challenge "can't mess it up". I shoot 99% for accuracy even with my ar15's. 1% is fast changing from target to target and so on. Got 20"fluted 5.56 ar that'll stack 30rds size of silver dollar at 250yds. My shooting is very disciplined

If you have a weapon system that can shoot 1/4 moa groups then my next question is how far apart are the groups if you consider combining the center of each group to get an idea of the overall grouping?

If the center of any group you fire is within 1/2 moa of your aiming point then you should be able to make hits on a 20" target at 1000 yards.

The above assumes the bullet you're using has a good enough ballistic coefficient. What bullet are you using currently?

Out side edge to furthest outside edge on group. I don't measure center to center. Best group with rum is with 180gr tsx and 7mag loves 160gr hotcors, failsafes, sst . I guess I'll go in buy expensive Bergers and start playing with those. As long as both barrels "like them" 1/2"moa should be easy. I'd assume 200gr for rum and 180gr for 7mag is better for less wind drift. I'll try couple dif weights for each barrel
