I am new to reloading so any advice would be great. I am going to start reloading for my STW and am wondering what would be a good powder choice. I am planing on shooting Berger 168 vld's. Also I will be ordering dies for 270 wsm soon, is there a powder that would be good for both.

Thanks

What bullet weight in 270WSM

I have a 270 WSM H1000 works well in 270WSM when firing 160 gr Nosler Partitions. IMR 7828 works wonders. Don't deviate from printed powder charge weights in the current reloading manuals.

Berger lists max load of 78.1gr Retumbo/3029fps
and 76.5gr H1000/2981 fps. I thought this caliber would be faster than this. More powder capacity than the 7 Rem mag, but load data doesn't seem to show that much more speed. Any thoughts.

I havn't tried the Berger yet but I've tried H1000, R19 and R22. 7828 became my go to powder from 140-160 grain accubonds and TSX's. Keep me posted on how the Bergers work out for you.

As you increase powder capacity you reduce efficiency. The 7mm RUM offers less gain over the 7MM STW than the 7MM STW does over the 7MM RM.
You will get a little more speed from the STW my experience is around 150fps over the Rem Mag or approx 100 yards difference, meaning the STW will be traveling the same speed as the Rem Mag about 100 yards further out.
I really like the 7mm STW and think that it is an awesome cartridge but is is just over my comfort level for shooting at the bench(without a brake), whereas I can shoot the 7mm RM all day at the bench without it bothering me.
For efficiency and performance it is hard to beat the 7mm RSAUM, I get a little over 3000fps with 180 Bergers in a 28" barrel, 3150 out of 162 Amaxes in a 30" barrel, and just over 3000 out of the 162 Amaxes in a 26" barrel. All my 7mm SAUM's are however custom chambers.

So far Retumbo is my go to powder for my STW. I just got my hands on some US869 but have yet to give it a try. I have always been able to get much better velocity out of my facory bbl'd STW than the books show. As always each rifle whether built identical or not is its own beast. In my experience with the faster magnums the diffrences between max loads can be pretty substantial as say a 308 win class cartridge. My rifle just loves the 168 bergers and Retumbo...

Started with H4831 with the 140's but got better accuracy and fps with H1000. The 140s were 3320 fps and holding between .5 and .75. Switched to 160 accubond and 79 grains of H1000. First group measured less than .25. But loaded up a box of 20 and so far when i sighted it in got a hair over .75 at 3211fps. I may try the retumbo as well.

I've used H1000 and Retumbo with the 7stw and 160 AB's. I just use Retumbo now but they both shot awesome groups without any tinkering. I've never used 7828 but I heard it is awesome in the STW.

I have the STW and a 338 Lapua and I just love the STW.

I did some chronographs on my 7mm STW loads with H-1000 and IMR-7828 last week and was getting just a little over 3200fps with a 150gr bullet. My 7mag. will get that too.I had some Winchester factory loads for the 7mm STW in 150 gr.,I chronographed them at 3455 and 3433!I was able to duplicate this load with Winchester WXR extruded double base powder. Now that's what the 7mm STW supposed to do.
