CAN ANYONE HELP ME WITH ANY INFO ON THE TDS RECON AND/OR THE NOMAD. I WILL BE USING ONE OF THESE TO RUN THE EXBAL PROGRAM FOR THE 338 AM I AM HAVING KIRBY ALLEN BUILD FOR ME. PRO'S AND CONS. ANY INFO WOULD BE WELCOME. WITH OR WITHOUT GPS? I WOULD LIKE TO GET THE ONE THAT WILL HANDLE FUTURE UPGRADES AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE. I use the TDS Recon in my surveying business. It is one tough computer, its been dropped in a creek, ran over with atv and its still running. TDS has upgrades posted regularly on their website. I have been using the same Recon for 6-8 years and thats a lifetime on a survey crew. That being said, I have not used it for ext. ballistics. I use a palm for ballistics program but have been debating upgrading software to windowsCE model for recon. Hope this helps. Wade

Thanks guys the info helps.I will be using one for mostly hunting.I hunt from horseback and in some pretty rough country with nasty weather to go along with it. How do they preform in cold weather. It was 10 degrees in camp this year on 2 mornings!!!! Specs say 14 is the lower limit.How about battery life? I pack in with horses and mules for weeks at a time. No electricity up there to recharge with. External battery packs?I like these units for the rugedness.Anyone else got some info? All the information I can get helps.THANKS

You can get spare batteries and yes I do believe that they are external battery capable

For cold weather use, you will definitely need the external battery packs. The cold weather will eat the rechargeable batteries fast. I've never had mine not work because of the cold, just battery issues. Still the best handheld out there IMO. Wade

The Trimble Nomad handheld's operating temperature is -22 to 140 degrees F. Storage temperature -40 to 158 degrees F. Weather would not be a problem normally. It has a altitude rating of 15,000 feet @ 73 degrees F.
